For me, the reason I played Animal Crossing a lot (and this only applies to the GCN game).
The NES games. Enough of a reason for me to deal with Tom Nook's slave driving ways boss ethics.
Oh, and I gladly cheated by reading someone's exploit so I can get the sought after Punch Out. Hey, it's Punch Out! I gladly cheated in that Animal Crossing if it meant I can get Punch Out! But that was later.
And that's why I still have my copy of Animal Crossing on the Gamecube. The NES games (especially Punch Out).
I do have the DS one but I didn't spend as much time on it like I did the GCN version.

^^^This too. I spent literally hours playing Tennis, Balloon Fight and Zelda in my little house. Hacked my way through for those too. Totally worth it

IMHO, most Nintendo games are overhyped. Wii Music and Wii Fit are perfect examples. (lol at the Sarcastic Gamer parody)

And Wii Fit isn't a game, it's just a thing to get people off their butts. It actually does its job fairly well if you use it every day, I hear.

As far as Wii Music goes, I haven't played it. But from what I hear, Nintendo was trying to hype it up before it came out. When it was finally released, pretty much everyone was all "this game sucks." And then Nintendo never really talked about it again.

I remember Miyamoto saying that it was really cool one time, but I've never heard Nintendo hyping it up at all. And I'm on their mailing list : X.

Ah, perhaps it was just Miyamoto, then. I remember reading a few articles with him talking about it, anyway.

A few people already mentioned it, but now that I've beaten it, I have to agree with the Ocarina of Time.
The game isn't bad per se, but it was exceptionally bland. It was a chore playing it because I just couldn't get into it; never did I feel particularly interested in what was going on or what I was doing. There's nothing that sucks you in. The lack of difficulty is definitely one factor, but I think the real problem is that the game just doesn't feel vibrant, for lack of a better term.

I find that games that have little hype usually become the greatest games in their genre. Why? Because no one is going to criticize the game for something they thought it was going to have but didn't or deem it inferior to a predecessor in its series. (Well they still may call it inferior to a predecessor, but if said game is less hyped, this is likely to not be as bad.)
I give Golden Sun as an example. It was a game I don't think was hyped, and it didn't have any predecessors. Critics consider it one of the best RPGs on the GBA, and better than TLA and DD.

I think GS was pretty hyped, relatively speaking for a GBA game.

It was? I didn't play it until 2004 when I got my GBA so maybe that's why I saw no hype.

Mm, no, Golden Sun was pretty hyped, partly for the same reason Tales of Symphonia was: It was pretty much the only RPG option for the console when it came out.
Golden Sun is a very competent RPG. I wouldn't call it exceptional, because what it's exceptional at is being competent. It's notably good at being pretty alright. If it's one of the best GBA RPGs, it's primarily because there's honestly not a lot of competition. There's, what, Mario & Luigi and the Summon Night: Swordcraft Story games? Some Medarot remakes and NAVI (and one of those remakes killed the franchise)? Mother 3, which didn't get translated until years after the GBA was dead and buried?
I wouldn't even say it's better or worse than The Lost Age. TLA is a very competent sequel. Not particularly good, not bad, but just about alright.
Now, as for a game that didn't live up to the hype? Dark Dawn.

You haven't even played Dark Dawn, you fool. Nah, I agree with you. It definitely didn't live up the hype.
