You know why this game was overlooked? It's hard, and people don't like strategy sometimes. It's a shame, but at the same time? Rebirth is -easily- the most strategic of all the tales games. The Three-Line Battle System forces you to think about your movements and formation. The unique setup for your attacks means that, without having to worry about TP, you have to think before you use your eres force. The force cube is an added level of strategy and customization. And upgrading your equipment? While not necessary, it is a very useful feature. Which is exactly why I like Rebirth. All the other Tales games I can button-mash and still win. It's not effective, but I can still get away with it. With Rebirth, on the other hand, if I button-mash without thinking of what I'm doing, I'm most likely going to die. It's actually challenging, and I like that Rebirth actually makes me think. I just wish I could read the menu D:

So, I take it that this game is the strongest title in the Tales series? I don't think I've ever heard anything bad about this game; usually those that have played it like the most. Which is why I'm a little skeptical to try this game. XD
Seriously, it sounds good. I'll have to pick it up sometime...

The narrative is a little weak to start off with... I'll see if it picks up later.

I think it's a great shame that this game is overlooked compared with the other ones. It probably has one of my favourite stories, and while the battle system isn't comaprable to any other Tales, it's still a brilliant one once you've learned the ins and outs of it. I liked the Enhance thing too, because you can't go far wrong with updating everyone's equipment well, even though it's in Japanese!

Pretty good premise, though the racism thing is indeed bringing a dark looming angsty moment within the game. Overall, it's pretty good. The story is solid enough for me. It's still a shame that Veigue and Tytree never did get that Hi-Ougi together... i better lower the volume of my TV then. o-o

^ lol, i could die laughing and getting deaf if i use my earphones---/bricked and i still wonder why oh why they don't get hi-ougi together, other than that!
i really like Rebirth, i don't see anything wrong with it...the customizations stuffs are great IMO. i guess people overlook it because they can't really understand those stuffs...

The game is fun -- not top-notch, but definitely not below above average...Though the battles do take a bit to get used to, since it took me forever just to figure out how to chain special attacks and control the rage meter-thing. Then again, the problem with not being able to read that guide probably contributed to that...-_-;;
Overall fun (and quite pretty)

I've never played the game myself, but I watched a walkthrough and loved the story and characters. I'd give anything to have had this in English. I have no idea why it wasn't translated.

I beat the game a couple a months ago and I must say it's a pretty great game. Though the only problem I had with the game is how to trigger the Hi-Ougis.

Speaking for myself, the greatest obstacle to my playing the game is the language barrier. I know how strategic the game (supposedly) is, and I doubt I'd be able to enjoy it for what it is with said barrier. Quite a shame, as I'd relish the opportunity to play it in English.

Trust me it's not bad once you start playing more imported games tho for Rebirth there is gonna be some spots where you literally will get stuck if you play it blind.

It's not terribly complicated. Plus, between Lanyn and Kouli all the bases are covered. The inheritance system takes a bit to understand, but there are good resources on using it. Most of it just consist of save abusing until you get the skills you want. You can easily play without even touching the skill system and get through just fine. You will need a guide for two or instances where you need a password in JPN Kouli, covers it though. I think Lanyn's guide actually explains how many clicks + direction to get the correct symbols needed.

I would like to play it as well as the other JP exclusive PS2 Tales. But my PC is garbage and cannot emulate them. It is a shame because I prefer the 2d games and I have sampled the soundtrack, which I think is pretty good.

I'd have to agree with this. I played Rebirth on and off through high school and college before finally beating it this year, and I definitely don't feel like I enjoyed this game as much as I could have because of the language barrier. It was obvious the game has a great battle system, and it was frustrating knowing I only scratched the surface of the game's potential with a rudimentary (at best) understanding of the game mechanics. I'd give the game a second playthrough in a heartbeat if it got a menu patch.

So would you guys say Rebirth is worth getting, even with the language barrier? I like the 2D Tales games, and I've played a little bit of Rebirth on an emulator (maybe an hour or so,) but I'd rather commit and buy it if I'm gonna play through the entire thing.
