Rebirth was a great addition to the series
Everything was easy to comprehend, but the whole enhancing/inheriting process gave me utter hell. I couldn't understand anything, besides which Skills are obtainable, depending on the level of difficulty. I felt that one mechanic held me back from actually considering a run. The one battle system when you don't really need to rely on recovery items, due to the health regeneration from the FG. The cooking system was fantastic because you'll get different effect in fights, depending on what you cook. Honestly, I wish Namco would consider bringing more musclebound humanoid characters, like Eugene in the mix. Why people look over this game, I don't know? People may have not been introduced to it. Rebirth merchandise is very limited as well. I only own a few items, in terms of shirts, posters, and the game itself. Have to appreciate the older games as well.
Tytree became my favorite in a split second. A very cool dude, who I can relate to.

So would you guys say Rebirth is worth getting, even with the language barrier? I like the 2D Tales games, and I've played a little bit of Rebirth on an emulator (maybe an hour or so,) but I'd rather commit and buy it if I'm gonna play through the entire thing. Yeah, Rebirth is definitely worth a play-through. Kouli has a good guide, and Lanyn has essential tools needed to understand the inheritance mechanics. You really don't even need the extra stuff, since it's used to get rather basic skills like "X2" damage, but the grind to max out the skill itself takes some work. Guides for the plot, and shops update throughout the game. Rebirth sets itself nicely for a casual run.

Tales of Rebirth is a pretty good tales game. I'd put in the upper half of the middle of the entire series. It has some really incredible aspects of the battle system. For example, the three line battle system where you can flank enemies and really be tactical with positioning. The music is also really incredible in Rebirth. One of the best soundtracks of the series for sure. The battle system is pretty cool with how you don't have to rely on TP and instead use the force gauge and force cube. Basically, you use one of four force cubes to do a skill and can then use other filled up force cubes to do additional skills to combo. Rebirth's story I think is one of it's strongest points.
Although, I don't know Japanese I did watch Ianyn's translated sub videos of the scenes of the game as I went through the game. I would say Eugene has one of the best character backstories of any tales character. He's a really incredibly well developed character. The other characters are quite good too. Veigue is one of my favorite characters in terms of character design and fighting style, but I dunno. Veigue is very goofy with his obsession with Claire throughout the game. Unfortunately, I felt the main antagonist was very generic and sort of the evil I hate everyone and want to kill everyone type of main antagonist. The main antagonist wasn't anything very original and lacked depth. The main thing that brings Rebirth down is two flaws in it's gameplay to me.
First off, the game has a super weird difficulty curve. Game starts off super easy at the beginning. Then once you reach the plant factory dungeon in Petnadjanka the game gets really hard for a while and then goes to a normal difficulty. Then from there the game difficulty is very back and forth. Sometimes it's very easy and sometimes it can be unusually hard. Second, the battle system felt slow compared to other games of the series and the combos you can do just don't feel as incredible as other games of the series. Something about the combos just don't feel that great compared other games of the series. Overall though, Rebirth is still a very fun game, the music is great and the main characters are well developed in the story. Just don't expect great antagonists in the story or super amazing combos like Graces, Destiny R or Hearts R.
