Ah, true, Phantasia's battle system was horrible and not fun at all. I cut it some slack because it's old, but it definitely didn't age well. Phantasia at least fixed the battle system in the remake. DotNW would have to be a completely different game to fix its issues.

What remake was this? PSX made it playable (whereas SNES and GBA were... not), but it still wasn't fun.

I thought it was quite fun.
And it was certainly the first playable Tales game.

umm I guess people need to look at the time when the game was published. TOP's battle system may appear as garbage nowadays, but in 1995 it was one of the best and most original style. We've just gotta appreciate how the RPG battle systems have evolved during the past 15 yrs.

Honestly i loved NW it was just perfect for me in every way emil was my favoarite character and the story could use a little work but other ethan htat i loved it by the way the "worst tales game" is still better than most stuff that comes out . i guess opoinion matter in this stuff but i rly like it

No, Tales at its best is really pretty middle of the road as far as games go. Worst Tales game is pretty bad as far as games in general go.
Trust me, I played Tales of the Tempest.

hehe yh i heard about tempest ( no winning there) but i still think NW is a good game on its own and i am honoered that it was my first tales game XP
