Hypothetically speaking, if the teams were to merge, their main weaknesses would vanish; however seeing the work of various titles recently, that isn't the case at all.
Am I the only one who's tired of hearing Motoi Sakuraba? It's not that he's a bad composer, I just hear him everywhere. I would enjoy someone else composing the series, so long as it's not whoever did the Hearts R OST.

I love Sakuraba's work on Star Ocean 2, Golden Sun and Dark Souls 1. Seriously: Gwyn's theme is my favourite final boss theme. That being said, his work on Tales isn't stellar. I've heard people say that Bamco limits him and tells him to make a certain 'sound', but I haven't ever read that anywhere officially. That said, I can certainly see if this was the case, because he's a super talented guy, but his work in Tales doesn't reflect that. I love a lot of the (non vocal) Go Shiina tracks I've heard from Zestiria. Why do they let Shiina have fun, but not Sakuraba? I'd love to have a Tales game where they gave Sakuraba full freedom. However, if having Go Shiina along is the only way to have some fun/variety, then I hope a joint effort with the two becomes the standard. After all, those temple themes are awesome.
Or maybe Yasunori Mitsuda will stop doing the weirdest games and compose a Tales ga- pffffffffffttttttttttttt couldn't even finish it.

Also keep in mind that until recently (Xillia onward) Sakuraba has just done battle themes and a few other tracks for each game, with the rest being done by Shinji Tamura/Hibiki Aoyama, so I think that's why the earlier games at least are weaker than their contemporary Sakuraba scores. And I've heard similar things about people in charge of the series requesting a very specific sound from Sakuraba and I'm inclined to believe it based again on their contemporary scores. I've read a number of interviews with game composers and they are often given direction from the game devs, so this isn't unheard of. It also makes sense that the stagnation of his style would happen specifically in the Tales series given the Tales Studio's general design philosophy of "if it ain't broke, don't fix it."

They might have lost a lot of their better developers in the process of merging together. With them gone, whatever weaknesses that the two teams had on their own would only become more apparent. I would like for them to learn from their mistakes to make a better quality game at some point, but only time will tell.
