I am a HUGE fan of games with 2 graphics and gameplay. I especially like the 2d Tales games. But it's kind of super unlikely that Bamco is ever going to be making many more of those again. So I might as well cut my losses and just play other games that are similar in kind. So I got to thinking of what other kinds of games there are like them. I know a couple, but there's got to be a lot more I missed. I made this thread so that we could recommend eachother games similar to the 2d Tales but, obviously, not Tales.
If you know any cool action rpgs with real time combat just like the Tales games where all the fights are on a 2d plane please tell me. I'm gonna check them all out and see whether they are good or not. There are a couple I have already played, just as a heads up. I'm looking for actual rpgs, not fighters. And not turn-based games with action-commands or any of that stuff. Although those are definitely fun, that's not what I am looking for in particular here.
Anyways, on to the list of games I know of. Feel free to add your own that you think other people should play and check out:
Dengeki Gakuen RPG: Cross of Venus* (DS)
I have played a bit of this one, did not get very far. I would have liked it a lot more if you didn't have to 1v pretty much every battle. You do get party members but you have to manually switch them into battle, and are only allowed use of 1 character at a time. It's really lame. I am also not a big fan of most of the series featured in this crossover game, so I really didn't care much for it from that perspective as well (it's cool that Kino is in it, though).
Star Ocean 1 and 2 (SFC, PS1 and PSP)
These games are made by the original team that made Tales of Phantasia so they have a lot in common. They are pretty fun games and are easy to jump into if you have played other old Tales. The original Super Famicom version of 1 is JP only, but has an English translation. There are also PSP ports of the first two games with enhanced graphics, gameplay and various other features.
Castlevania: Dawn of Sorrow, Portrait of Ruin, Order of Ecclesia (DS), Symphony of the Night (PS1), Circle of the Moon and Aria of Sorrow (GBA)
These games are great. Cool monster designs, music, gameplay, and power-ups. I would highly recommend playing all of them.
Fortune Summoners (PC) and Lost Vikings (PC and GBA)
This game is pretty fun. You play as a sword wielding loli who explores dungeons with her magic casting friends. If you played Lost Vikings by Blizzard it is a lot similar to that game. Some levels can be tedious and certain parts are even downright unfair. But if you like cute anime characters and hack and slash 2d platforming + action rpg gameplay I would recommend giving them a chance. Fortune Summoners is available on Steam, but it's a little short so I'd recommend taking it at a discount if you can.
Fairy Bloom Freesia (PC)
This game is very heavily based of the same style of combat you see in Smash Bros and Tales. The player character even looks a whole lot like Farah from Eternia, and even plays a whole lot like her as well. It is pretty short but very fun and challenging if you play on the harder modes. I would recommend getting it on Steam if you see it for a discounted sale price.
Super Robot Wars Original Generations: Endless Frontier 1 and 2* (DS)
These are also cross-over games featuring characters from both the Original Generations Super Robot Wars series and some other cross-overs like Kos-Mos from Xenosaga and a couple other games. It's pretty fun and also rather challenging. If you are a mecha fan it is highly recommended. Unfortunately only the first game got an English release. These games are turn based and only have you do actions during your attacks, like the Mario RPG games. Although that stuff is good it's not what I'm looking for in particular. Same applies to NamcoxCapcom games and Project XZone.
Super Smash Bros Series (N64, Gamecube, Wii, 3DS and WiiU)
Whenever I explain Tales to a friend who hasn't played them I always tell them "It's basically Final Fantasy mixed together with Super Smash Bros." These games are fun to play with your friends, good stuff. But pretty much everyone has played them to death so I don't need to say anything more. These are more in the style of fighting games, so I'm not really looking for that kind of stuff either. So games like Street Fighter, Guilty Gear, and BlazeBlue are out of the question.
I also heard a lot of good things from people about the Keroro RPG on DS. I am unsure if I should actually play it, though. Since it is JP only and also based off an already existing anime and manga series. Would I miss out on a whole lot of stuff in the game if I just jumped straight in? The language barrier is not too much of an issue for me. Having to refer to a guide would be kind of lame, but I can live with it. I prefer to brute force my way through these types of games anyway just so I have an excuse to get into more battles.
Thanks for reading my thread, I hope we can trade some good recommendations.
