After I played Xillia and really enjoyed it, I finally tried the game my friends had been recommending to me for years, Tales of Symphonia! I didn't think it could possibly be as good as they said... but I was wrong, because I loved every moment of it. I enjoyed the gameplay (especially the World Map, I need more World Maps in games, please), adored the story and had a great time coming up with theories (sometimes having so many at a time that my friend could safely say to me, "One of the things you said is spot-on," and not spoil anything), and fell absolutely in love with the characters. Even my least favorite *coughYuancough* won my appreciation in the end.
And now I'm completely obsessed with it and rambling about it to anyone who will listen to me. xD It might have become my favorite game ever! It certainly feels that way now.

Glad to hear that you're liking the series so far. Tales of Symphonia is one of my favorite games of all time and the one that got me into the series. The battle system and the characters were what really drew me into the game. It was always fun playing this game with either my sister or my friends and completely wreck enemies.

I had this weird nostalgia for Symphonia despite playing it for like an hour with my cousin back when it was released. After playing through it myself a few years back I felt a bit disappointed because it was so different from what I remembered, but at the same time I found out it was even better than I expected. I still feel like the Symphonia I played through recently and the Symphonia I played in 2004 are completely different games.
Anyway, glad to hear someone new to the series actually liked Symphonia. I've heard many people liking the newer PS3 titles but not liking Symphonia because of the unpolished battle system.

Yeah, I've heard people complain about the battle system for being old and outdated, but I didn't mind it at all. I even found it oddly relaxing. Maybe this is in part because I didn't use free run a lot in Xillia anyway.

There is something to be said for a battle system that doesn't emphasize combos and spamming so much. Free run is nice and all, but creates a completely different game, not necessarily better or worse. Honestly, the only thing I think that doesn't hold up well in Symphonia is the party AI.

Raine is easy enough to compensate for by giving her direct orders, but some of the group bosses (Sylph, cameo fight, etc.) can be really difficult if your other melee characters don't keep attacking who you want them to. That made it pretty much impossible for me to beat the Hero Trio on Mania.

That made it pretty much impossible for me to beat the Hero Trio on Mania. And I couldn't even beat them on normal! (and by "couldn't beat," I mean by the end of the game I attempted the bonus bosses/dungeon still awaiting me and then said, "Ahahaha.... okay, so the Tower of Salvation is that way, right..." And this is why I'm not a completionist. XDD)

For me Symphonia is like 'Tales of Comfort Food'. It's not as long as most of the later games if you include side quests, and the combat is fairly simple. I feel like Vesperia does a lot of what Symphonia does bigger and better, but starting a new game of Vesperia is such a time commitment that I usually just go with Symphonia instead.
Put it in, turn it on and zone out. And there's absolutely nothing wrong with that.

I also somehow find something new to do every time, like go to Hima before Palmacosta or get the Sylvarant summons before Tower of Salvation. Then later on there's who I pick in the Flanoir event.

I'm glad to see Symphonia love. It is the game that got me into the series and it's probably my favorite all-time game. It's great to play it with friends, and if you play it on higher difficulties, it challenges you to play better and figure out new ways to play that you didn't think about on a first playthrough or lower difficulty (this is generally true of all the games). I've played this dang thing about 20 times I love it so much.

I used to play it everyday on the gamecube for hours!
