Does anyone have any idea why Berseria? Zestiria came from zest, so I was wondering if anyone has come up with anything for Berseria. (We have the Bearseria explanation too i guess). When I first saw the three titles they trademarked, I joked that Berseria would be about people going berserk. I'm sticking with that as my guess for now. XD First thing I thought was "wow...the names have been lacking now...". BERS....bEARS?! I like the berserk idea though.

Berzelia is the name of a flower, but not a particularly pretty one, and I doubt that's where the name of the game comes from. It would be pronounced closely to Berseria in Japanese, however.

^^ That doesn't sound like a bad theory at all. Stereotypically pirates are pretty ugly so why not. You are right though, It's pretty dull-looking.
I like the idea of "berserk", and it kinda matches with the "devour" thing too.

I have to ask: does anybody else feel like this is a bit... early? Zesty was the first Tales I followed from announcement to release. Since I wasn't watching for the announcement of any of the other games, it's possible that the things which stand out to me as odd are actually quite normal, but here are a few of them:
- There was a real lack of information given. Zestiria's announcement didn't exactly come with a bundle of info, but we got more than a name and MC. Perhaps there's more info from the festival that has yet to trickle onto the internet (I really would love to see that video), but it seems extremely bare.
- Since the teams merged, wouldn't that imply development on Berseria started in January? This is assuming that a smaller group did the DLC while the main group started on the new game. That would put the current dev time at roughly 5-6 months, which to me seems extremely early on.
- What is the usual gap between announcement and release for these things? I remember people complaining that the 13 months for Zestiria was too long, which again makes me wonder how much dev time they are planning.
- This might sound like a really dumb one, but I'd rather ask than pretend like I know: will they need to make a new engine for the PS4 version? I've heard time and time again that the PS3 is really wonky to develop for, so I'm not certain if you can just lift the engine. I ask because I recall reading that the reason behind Zesty's roughly three year dev time was due to the new engine.
I don't mean to sound like I'm negative on Berseria - it's far to early to have strong opinions. I'm far from an expert in game development, so take my opinion for what you will, but it seems to me that the more recent Tales games suffer from a rushed development, and I can't help but worry Berseria is heading down that same road. I remember thinking with Zestiria that, having had three years, they would have the time to make a stellar game, however it appears to contain several technical problems that really should have been fixed. Is there anybody here who has been following these announcements for a while now? If so, I'd really like to hear your thoughts.
SO OKAY, I'm done being a negative nancy, raining on the parade, so I'm going to list some things Berseria could (or does) have that excites me in an attempt to bring back some positivity.
+ Fujishima is coming back! YAY! + Maybe Team Symphonia style battle system since Zesty was more TD style? + It's on PS4! I recently got one of those thingies! + Hopefully with ships we'll get that feeling of exploring a massive world, rather than a single (extremely diverse) chunk of land! + Can we get Go Shiina on music again? I'm not a fan of his vocal tracks, but his instrumentals are fabulous! + If they do a localization, we can realistically hope for dual audio again, so pay attention to those seiyū!

I'm not a fan of his vocal tracks, but his instrumentals are fabulous! + If they do a localization, we can realistically hope for dual audio again, so pay attention to those seiyū! If i recall correctly, they stated they had to redo the engine so it could be ran on PS4 as well (the engine, not Zesty). That's most likely why they spent so much time on it and still spurted out a bit incomplete game. I imagine they will be using the same one on Berseria as well. I'm no expert on game development myself but I've been closely following some kickstarter projects so I have some information about that. There's a common misconception of some sort about the early DLCs etc. When game has been designed and the only thing left is for programmers and testers to fix the bugs and some 3D artists to tune some little details, the designers and concept artist are planning the next game or the possible DLC. Most likely Berseria has been on pre-production for at least a year or so. They will most likely be focusing on the biggest problems that Zestiria suffered from. It wouldn't be impossible for namco to have something saved for E3, and they might consider the localization after Zestiria's english release. The battle system designer/programmer from Eternia/Rebirth/Graces was handling the Zestiria's battle system, so I have a feeling they might go for the team symphonia style system this time. Also, has it been confirmed Shiina will be doing the soundtrack? I wouldn't mind, we have Sakuraba already on Star Ocean 5 most likely so Shiina would be a nice change.

Go Shiina isn't confirmed, I'll go edit that so it isn't misleading. Apologies. If that's true about the engine, then great. If they can hit the ground running, focusing just on the game, that restores some of my hope. I have heard similar things about the game development timeline, but I've never really heard just how much time they have. In super late January (borderline February) Baba said: "While we can't say much right now, we are already discussing a new concept for a new game."*. I wouldn't have considered 'already discussing a new concept' quite so far along. But then, Baba is a confirmed silly goose, so who really knows. And Bamco does have something for E3 - it's called Dark Souls 3. But don't tell nobody, 'cuz it's a secret. I jest, but I think we'll be waiting until TGS for any new (big) Tales news, since E3 seems to focus more on western games, or games more in line with western tastes (like the aforementioned Dark Souls). Though I agree it is possible to get a localization confirmation. I will say this for Bamco or Baba, I'm not worried that Berseria won't get localized. Yet. * taken from: www.abyssalchronicles.com/?fn_mode=comments&fn_id=1364

+ It's on PS4! I recently got one of those thingies! I did too! You should add me! Although this does make me wonder. With the share play system on PS4, maybe multiplayer could be done with multiple consoles?

I didn't have an interest in the PS4 until this game was announced and by the time it did, I already bought a Wii U. ----------I would like to see them go all in with the pirate theme. It would be a waste to have the main character be a pirate and have it be a small facet of the game.

That's pretty short time between "discussing a new concept" and announcing the said concept, I'd say. Of course if they've been so efficient in their discussions then why not. It could be a translation error as well, who knows. Either way, of they are confident the concept will work, I don't see any problem announcing it early. It builds up the hype. They did not show any in-engine stuff just yet? If they only showed concept art for the characters and stuff, the development could be in a fairly early stage. My experience in the development cycles come from some discussions with the developers in couple of the kickstarter games' forums. With Pillars of Eternity they started planning the first Expansion about 7 months before the release and they confirmed they are considering and planning the sequel around the same time Pillars of Eternity launched, which was in closed beta for about 8 months. Also, inXile has already launched their third kickstarter campaign, and only the first one (Wasteland 2) of them has been released (and that is getting a remastered GOTY edition soon) and the second kickstarter project (Torment: Tides of Numenera) is going to be in development for at least half a year. They are using their resources as efficiently as possible without having to lay off anyone.

With the share play system on PS4, maybe multiplayer could be done with multiple consoles? Ever made an account in a mood, and then you're stuck with the name because the service doesn't let you change it later? THANKS PSN! (yeah sure, no problem, what's your whoosie-watcha-thingy that lets me do that?) And maybe? Seems to me you'd need a pretty solid connection for it to work well. Might fall under the list of 'not ideal, but functional' ways to get local multiplayer to work online. They did not show any in-engine stuff just yet? If they only showed concept art for the characters and stuff, the development could be in a fairly early stage. "Velvet is apparently a female pirate, and themes of pirates and ships were shown during the short scenery video they played at the event."* I don't know exactly what a 'scenery video' is. Not much, I suspect, but there was more than just concept art. * abyssalchronicles.com/?fn_mode=comments&fn_id=1381

I've had pretty solid connections on PS4 so far, so it doesn't seem too far fetched to add online multiplayer. But who knows? Maybe Bamco will drum up sales for each version by offering exclusive costumes individually on PS3 and PS4. I just see them finding someway to profit off a multi console release.

"Midgand". Yeah, because that doesn't sound COMPLETELY STUPID!
No, I'm kidding, that's pretty much my reaction to a lot of these names when I first hear them. Usually they settle in and become acceptable, with the single exception of 'Boleteria'... that one just... ooof. Different game series though, so I'm sure Midgand will sound less silly in time.
Also that looks like a regular ship, so I'm really starting to think the whole sky pirates this might be wishful thinking. (but if it turns out it wasn't, I'm totally going to claim to have said this on purpose in order to trick the universe (but, of course, I just jinxed it (and then counter jinxed it! (and then... uh... what were we talking about again?))))

Actually, that makes a lot of sense given what they said about the extreme temperature differences in the north and south of Midgand, since Midgard is in between Niflheim--ice--and Muspelheim--fire. It's also completely surrounded by water. The more I think about this, the more I think the name Midgand comes from Midgard.

^^^^ That was my initial thought as well. Of course I did not know that much about Midgard. Still, Midgand? Mid-gand? Gand, according to google translate, means "plan" in romania. There we go, It's only semi-planned world. Stuff's going to hell because someone didn't plan the world properly and now they have to start all over again. The protagonist's job is to devour the world and poop out a well-planned world where everything is fine and extreme weathers are not bothering anybody.
Dunno, to me it sounds fine... Still hoping for sky pirates though.
