My favorite genres are RPGs, fighting games, action/beat 'em ups (ie. Devil May Cry and Streets of Rage), and platformers. I've been interested in RPGs since I first played Pokémon Yellow back in the day. I'm interested in them not so much for the story but more for the game mechanics as they focus on strategy and planning along with constant progression. I tend to prefer ones that keep me involved with the combat and require some amount of thought.
When it comes to my other preferred genres, I play them as a way to balance out my interest in RPGs. Whenever I get bored of the slower pace of RPGs, I'll pick a game from one of these genres.

I would recommend Diablo series, if you have not played them already. There's also the MMORPG Path of Exile. They are basically fast paced RPGs.
I mainly play only RPGs, whether it's JRPG, SRPG, CRPG, ARPG and all those other vague subgenres. I do enjoy some occasional narrative-heavy games like Bioshock, L.A Noire and Portal, and I do play other games as well, like platformers or fighting games. My most played genre is definitely RPG though, specifically CRPGs like Baldur's Gate or Planescape: Torment.
I looked through my steam library and apparently I do not like simulation, FPS or pure RTS/Strategy games. Usually I enjoy games with strong narrative the most, second in the list are games I can enjoy with my friends.
As long as the game is fun and engaging, I'll play it. If game takes more than 5 hours to properly get going, I usually end up dropping the game completely. Roguelikes/lites can be good fun though.

I should give games like it a try at some point. I've never really enjoyed FPS games either. I don't get much enjoying out of firing a gun.

JRPGs and strategy. I also like simulation... will always have a soft spot for the Sims, even if 4 is an empty, hollow version of 3. So sad.
I like platformers in theory, but... I'm terrible at them. Really terrible. Repeatedly dying and getting stuck on stupid, simple sh*t tends to suck a lot of the fun out of things. Not their fault, though.

Here are some of my favorite genres. I tried to explain what I like about them along with a few of my favorite games in each.
Action RPGs - Ys, Odin Sphere, Metroidvania, Tales, anything made by Quintet
I'm really picky about these. A lot of times the RPG and action elements will clash in this genre and either skill-based combat will take a back seat to raw stats or button mashing will supplant real strategy.
Turn-based RPGs - Chrono Trigger, Golden Sun, Baten Kaitos Origins, Radiant Historia, Trails in the Sky, Pokemon
The story and characters are usually what keep me coming back to these, although I love Golden Sun and Baten Kaitos for the depth of micromanaging required for certain bosses (especially the extra ones).
Platformers - Classicvania, DKC, Mega Man X, Kirby, Klonoa, Drill Dozer, Super Meat Boy
Sonic is too fast and Mario is too floaty for me. I prefer slower-paced platformers like Castlevania or ones with really tight controls like DKC or Super Meat Boy. I also like puzzle-platformers like Kirby and Klonoa; I've recently been playing Starfy and want to get into the Wario Land series at some point, too.
Adventure games - Zelda, Banjo, 2D Metroid, Metroidvania, 3D Mario, Rayman 2
I really like getting 100% completion in games like these, so if doing so is annoying or tedious, it's a major turn-off for me (I'm looking at you, DK64 and Wind Waker).
Shooter-ish - Starfox 64, The Binding of Isaac, anything made by Treasure
I like sh'mups as long as they aren't crazy difficult for 80s/90s quarter-eating reasons (Contra, etc.). I'm not sure if Isaac belongs here, but I think I enjoy it for the same reasons I enjoyed Starfox. I've been meaning to finally get into Wing Commander and Doom lately, too. I don't have much interest in modern FPS games.

I like pretty much all kinds of RPGs. Other than that...
Well, I used to love FPS'. Half-Life 1 and F.E.A.R. 1 still get replayed on an almost yearly basis, however I cannot stand what the genre has become. I used to like MMOs. Played World of Warcraft from Vanilla to WotLK, but after nearly failing my senior year of High School to raiding, I made a life change. Since then I've discovered I can't play them anymore. Getting away from the drama of a hardcore raiding guild, as well as the irritation of playing your role PERFECTLY and still losing because of other people... Well, I'm a better person for it.
I used to like multiplayer games, but after extended time with CS:GO I've developed such a loathing of random people that I can't play them anymore. It's bad enough to listen to the other team's constant verbal barrage, but to lose time and time again because of other people's incompetence... I just hit a point of being done with any game where success is reliant on people I don't know.
So I guess really RPGs. I enjoy the 2d mario games, some beat 'em ups and action games, and other selections from various genres, but RPGs dominate my time... except for the 775 hours I'll never get back from CS:GO.

For me it's RPGs (Tales, FF, KH, Souls, Pokemon, Disgaea, Etc.), Action (DMC, Ninja Gaiden, Bayonetta, MGR:R), Adventure (LoZ, Banjo, Rayman 1-3, 3D Mario). You can also sell me on anything Touhou Project related, so yeah.
Secondary genres are Fighters, TPS, RTS, and Racing Games. Basically, I really love single player, but can get into multiplayer, IF I have friends who I can expect to not hurl insults at me on my team.

I've never really gotten into the hardcore MMORPG scene. I played some casual Dungeons and Dragons Online with my brother a bunch of years back and we got decently far with that, until we hit the ridiculous paywalls. I have played one particular MMORPG called Spiral Knights for about a thousand hours already, although I've not been very active in the past year. I still occasionally visit to say hi to some pals there. I kinda stopped playing it after their main game designer took off and they screwed up the system, and because the PvP scene died. I think I'll actually go back to it again. The soundtrack tickles my nostalgia bones even harder than any SNES soundtrack. Although I'm mainly single player game player nowadays, I have already 2000 hours clocked in Dota 2...and still no end in sight. I'm glad (or maybe not) the community in that game is less toxic and annoying than CS:GO's, otherwise I would've stopped ages ago. I have developed hate for random people through Dota 2 as well, but it's mainly directed towards russians :S. I don't actually hate russia and it's people, it's just that most of the dumbest people I've met in the public matchmaking in Dota have been russians for some reason. I can't imagine how actually nice russian people feel when playing the game and getting all the hate directed towards them .

Mainly RPGs(mostly JRPGs but a few WRPGs) & Puzzle games.
Although I do also enjoy games like Animal Crossing, Harvest Moon and The Sims, which are I guess Life Sims or something.
I also use to be into Platformers and Point & Click Adventure Games as a kid but not really anymore.

No more Oregon Trail and Zork: Grand Inquisitor for you?
There's something oddly entertaining but dull about those games. I still have all the ones that came in cereal boxes back in the 90s.

Well, my disqus profile has said for years that I love "RPGs, Rogue-likes, and Robots," and I really can't say that's changed at all... though I really don't play many games along those lines these days.
Hmm, it's easier for me to talk about games by their thematic genres than their standard-issue Video Game Genres.
I love dungeon-crawlers, especially Roguelikes and Wizardry-likes, but I also include games like La-Mulana and Dark Souls in this genre. What's important is that there be a dungeon, that the dungeon be worth exploring, and that exploring the dungeon comes with the real and present danger of untimely death. The dungeon could be a catacomb or a giant tree or even an entire kingdom, but above all else it should be a truly inhospitable environment I like the way fights in Wizardry-style games (especially Etrian Odyssey) serve both as tests of moment-to-moment combat prowess -and- as ongoing resource attrition. It prevents the usual JRPG problem of random battles being meaningless trash and consumable items being worthless when you have resources that can't be easily replenished and don't have save points sitting directly in front of every obstacle.
For me, Etrian Odyssey is the perfect RPG- They don't skimp on either the role-playing or the game. As a tabletop RPG junkie, I'd rather the game be quiet and give me stories to tell through the setting and gameplay mechanics rather than Characters and Dialogue, which is what most people take "Role-Playing Game" to mean. For some reason. Even though Character-Focused Dialogue Game is not the name of the genre at all. Shoot, isn't that just the basic description of Visual Novels? Dark Souls scratches the same personal role-playing itch. And La-Mulana really wants you to get into the mindset of an archaeologist exploring dangerous ancient ruins- it's even in the manual!
I really like anime-style fighting games- both the Melty Blood/Guilty Gear-style "airdash" 2D fighters, and the 3D arena-fighters like Gundam vs Gundam or Ultimate Ninja Storm. A good shounen anime fight is crisp, fluid, punchy, and flamboyant as hell- traits that translate well into the medium of games. I don't care much for the competitive aspect of most fighting games- what I like about them is the way they use momentum and mechanical finesse to create fights that are viscerally satisfying. Also, a good fighter, like a good anime, should have cool ultimates. They're a chance to put the spotlight on the character for a moment, letting them do something they normally couldn't under the game systems.
If anyone asks, the name of my own Ultimate Combo is "Houkai Amplifier"
