There's a thread on the Official Tales forum (By Natsumi, no less) about this, but A) I don't go there, and not everyone here does, maybe (I only saw it while Googling "Tale Phantasia"), and B) This isn't there. Blah.
I haven't played it, ha ha, but the PSX version looks the best in my opinion (Not a fan of the PSP, as ye can tell). I dunno, I don't really like the battle sprites in the PSP version from what I've seen, but that could just be a bad shot. Ha ha, more voice acting is a plus, though, I suppose.
...Why does everyone seem to want a 3D remake of ToP? Ick, 3D does not magickally make things better. Most things work much better as sprites than in 3D (Final Fantasy Tactics, anyone?). I would like a ToDR-style remake of ToP, though (Administering the necessary patches to the story to make it flow as well as it should, of course).
Addendum: Fixed an age-old typo :'D

I like the SNES version, if only because it's the only one I played, and because I'm partial to the DeJap translation. I'm not a big fan of the original character designs of the heroes by the sprite artist, but that's me.

If the voices were better, then I will go for the GBA version. I haven't played the PSP and the PSone version yet so there's not much for me to choose from. And I would greatly prefer bad voices over EXTREMELY FREQUENT RANDOM ENCOUNTERS WITH EACH BATTLE TAKING A MINUTE TO FINISH so yeah that's the reason I chose the GBA version ;D

That's why we have magic mist.
...Gah, I hate the elves' forest, though. The snakemen always petrify my party, and items take forever to use...

By the time we get that item, thousands of random battles had already passed though... I never gotten far after the first battle against Dhaos (no not the intro battle ).... I just decided to finish the GBA version, which was more forgiving in terms of random encouter rate...

Well, at least Phantasia is better than Skies of Arcadia.
Oh god, that's almost -painful-.

I've played the SNES version, the GBA version, and the PSX versions, and I have to say that the PSX version's the best by a long shot. The SNES version, while featuring Japanese voice acting and graded menus, is the most primitive version of all ToP's. Of course, this is understandable since this is the first ever ToP! The PSX version features redone maps(Houses now feature toilets and bathtubs!), a 3D overworld, clearer and added voice acting, the whole "skit" thing, smoother battles... The list goes on. The GBA version, as all of you should know, is a hybrid between the 2 versions. It has choppy battles, a crappy font, horrible voice acting, etc. The maps are ripped completely from the SNES version too, but it uses the PSX's sprites. Umm... That's all I can thing of for now.
So yah, PSX.

I've played the PSX for only about two hours when my cousin visited me (he's Japanese. I asked him to bring over his copy of ToP), and I have to say I like it the best, although I haven't played the PSP version... I mean, it's full-voiced, right?

I've played the GBA version and a little bit of the PSX version with Zettai Zero's English patch and feel it's already safe to say the PSX version is way better. As for random encounter rates, I don't find them that bad. And the battles aren't that hard... so I don't mind. If you've only played one version, I don't think you can really compare them.
The overall consensus seems to be that the PSX version is the best. But it's hard to get your hands on nowadays.

I plated a "DeJapped" Phantasia for the SNES on an emulator, and either the original script was outrageously hilarious and crude at times, or the translators took a little too much liberty and made things more colorful than they really were in Japanese. I have no proof, but I think they stuck pretty close to what it would have been.
I got a new computer one day and never finished playing it, but I recently got the GBA version. The graphics/sprites looked very different, and it was a huge change for the better. However, they butchered the hell out of the dialogue into something way kiddier than it was in the dejapped version. Everything that was crude, such as Claus/Klarth saying that "Arche phux like a tiger," was watered down to something that was barely funny in comparison. It was actually due to the fact that I knew the US version of the game was going to get super kiddy-ized that I lost interest in getting the GBA version at first. After hearing Dhaos say "What the HECK is that?!" instead of "--HELL is that", I knew the rest of the game's true dialogue was going to get equally crapped on for the US audience.
But anyway, I think the sprites of the GBA version, but I think the PSX version might be the best. I've never played it, but it looks the best graphically. I don't like the pastel colors of the SNES version. >.<

I have no proof, but I think they stuck pretty close to what it would have been. DeJap is the name of the translation group. They're famous for taking lots of liberties with the script; the Absolute Zero PSX translation is probably the most faithful so far, but I haven't seen Phantasia Production's script. DeJap really didn't stick close to it at -all-. Phantasia is really a fairly serious game. Except for the skits~. (IFRIIIIT!) The GBA's sprites were based on the PSX version's sprites. The 'Arche phux like a tiger' line was famously added by DeJap. Personally? I much prefer the script without DeJap's flourishes. Phantasia's isn't a story deserving of crude humor. Just fiery Klarths. I am the only one who didn't notice the apparently high encounter rate in the PSX version.
