Double-posting, my deepest apologies.
I'm curious to know what languages people find most and least acoustically pleasing.
For me, I enjoy the sound of Italian and French the most (I know, so original). I also have a place in my heart for German and Dutch; neither sound pretty, but I like the intonation and how harsh they sound.
As for languages I don't like the sound of... I strongly dislike the sound of Thai, and I'm not a huge fan of Mandarin, either.

Italian sounds like a greaseball language and French sounds stuck up.
I like German because it sounds like you're always saying something hardcore and I like Chinese and Japanese.

Speaking of the Middle East, I hear that bad things can happen to men with long hair in Saudi Arabia. Staying away from there. Not sure about the long hair, but I've heard things about not having a beard, that's why my uncle grew a beard and moustache before he worked there as an engineer. sorry for being late...it's been a while since I last visited here....so I think you guys had it backwards.... I used to live in Saudia Arabia & I can assure you there is nothing of the sort.... Men & Women are free to wear whatever they like.....grow a beard or a long hair is up to you....no one would throw you in Jail for it....

I picked up the workbook for Genki I recently. Time to start brushing up on my nihongo.

Ah. I'm using that same workbook. I don't write in it, though, because I'm thinking of selling it when I move past Genki I (assuming I do, of course).
Speaking of Nihongo, I start learning katakana tomorrow. I hope it's as easy to learn as hiragana was.

Our teacher doesn't accept photocopies of the pages.

How slowly is your class going? My class is going pretty slow I guess? We don't actually start learning kanji until January... We have to write in our workbooks. Our teacher doesn't accept photocopies of the pages. Oh, my sensei just plain lets us use notebook paper. All we have to write down are the answers.

Really? Kanji in January? The people I know taking Japanese I here learned katakana weeks ago and already know a handful of kanji :X

Wait, you started the class in September/late August, right?
Jeez, my high school Japanese class was through with Hiragana in a week, tops.
And no Kanji until second semester? The second semester class I'm entering in the Spring will have already gotten up to at least chapter 6, which is 58 kanji.
Anyways, after you learn Hiragana, Katakana is a flash in the pan. It's all the same stuff, different shapes. Grammar's the hard part.

I started classes in late September. My community college works on a quarter system (3 quarters is roughly 2 semesters). That might be why I'm going to be learning kanji late.

That's still pretty slow, though. A person could learn hiragana or katakana in one sitting if they wanted to.

^ I've actually heard of such a case. I know I wouldn't be able to do it, though. Too much memorization in one day. Perhaps my instructor doesn't introduce kanji the first quarter because she doesn't want half the class gone after the first week.

Well, I don't see what the difference is. If they don't get it at first they won't get it later. There's still the tons of grammar points you're going to have to learn.
Hiro, which Elements 2 are you taking in the Spring?

I'm not sure, I haven't looked at the sections.
EDIT: Probably Yoshida's afternoon class.
