^ That novel analogy is exactly how I feel about a lot of games. Games are usually better off as singular experiences as the sequels rarely reach the same level. There are exceptions of course and some games were meant to be trilogies etc. but I think its more often than not that sequels fall flat due to being sequels for the sake of making another popular game.
I finished my third(?) Baldurs Gate playthrough last night and did all the major sidequests for the first time ever. I plan to continue on to the Siege of Dragonspear, expansion made 15 years after the release, and then to Baldurs Gate 2 with the same character. What a great, frustrating and intense couple of games they are. I love the power curve in those games. You start as lvl1 dumbass who knows nothing about the world and evolve, through 100+ hour trilogy and countless of challenges, into the reincarnation of the god of murder. The best part is that it rarely fails to entertain me and realizing how much stronger you've gotten is really satisfying.
