I don't buy textbooks because I don't read them.
The only textbooks I buy are the ones that are full of essays, like the one I used in my Philosophy class and the one I used in my Nature of Crime class. If it's just facts, I can just pay attention in class. Essays are much more interesting to read than textbook chapters anyways. Usually.
Especially if they're examples of terrible logic. Those are fun.

What I find is that if a class is based on knowing the facts and terminology, you can just skim chapters for the bolded terms, which usually are what you're tested on.
Now if it's something like music theory and Japanese, which I'm going to be studying for a while, I will usually read the chapters as assigned.

It depends on the class. For some classes, I do it. I've had a couple classes where not all the material was covered in class, so if you didn't read the book, you'd be screwed. If you didn't read the book in my linguistics class in freshman year... it didn't matter how smart you were, you were going to bomb the class spectacularly. (I like linguistics anyway, though, so I didn't mind reading the book.)
Other classes, if I think I can get away with not reading, I don't do it. Like my poetry class last semester. I hate poetry and the class was discussion-based with the only writing assignments outside of class, so I just didn't read the poems assigned unless I had to for an essay.

What's everyone's major (or planned major, if you haven't yet matriculated)?
Psychology and Modern Greek here. (Technically, the major is Hellenic Studies and encompasses the history and culture as well, but everyone always gives me a deer-in-the-headlights look about the word hellenic...) I've been told I have enough credits for a Classics minor, so I might tack that on, too. Can't hurt the CV, anyway.

Pre-majoring in Music Theory/Composition. Depending if I follow up with transferring to a University or not, I would turn that into a major. Now that I think about it, I would probably minor in Japanese, too.

Major in Fine Arts here. Everyone told me I should just major in Art, even my parents lol. I used to be a Programming major a long time ago, and even though I did well, I had my second thoughts ever since I saw a friend of mine who got a job as a head programmer in a beer company. His eyes kept blinking like crazy, which means he stays in front of a computer the whole day, likely doing some major coding. The pay's really good, but sitting on a desk, being in front of a computer the whole day is not the kind of life I want. Something as small as that made me seriously reconsider my career goals I've had jobs where I would sit on a desk the whole day, and I hated it. Office environments piss me off. The jobs where I stay standing and keeps me on my toes are the ones that make my day, so I reckon working in a studio or workshop is better for me than in an office.

That's because most psych majors don't give a damn about psychology and I do.

It's one of those majors people major in when they have no idea what they want to do with their life. Most people find psych interesting. Few find it fascinating.
