Um, wait, if I'm interpreting what you wrote correctly, I'm confused. Natalia's "love" for Luke is damaging to Asch? My recollection was that Natalia dropped Luke like a hot potato when she found out he wasn't the real deal. Not to say she didn't still love him, but she definitely loved Asch way more deeply.
I think if we're talking about anyone's love making Asch feel jealous or hurt, it'd be his parents for so blindly accepting Luke, or Van for taking him under his wing too (albeit that's not exactly what I would call love so much as it is grooming for evil designs...).

I still don't understand why he thought his parents didn't love him anymore because they had accepted Luke... He knew it was a replica looking exactly like him, how were they supposed to know it wasn't him?

that's the reason I hate Asch for.....
why can't he just go on together with Luke?....blaming Luke for everything happened to him while Luke himself is a victim.... could we say that he was scared for he'll die that's why he was angry all the time?
Asch is just a bonehead......

He knew it was a replica looking exactly like him, how were they supposed to know it wasn't him? To be fair though, just having been turned away by the guards and used by the oracle knights, he must of been running rather low on trust at the time, not to mention he was still pretty young.

I still don't understand why he thought his parents didn't love him anymore because they had accepted Luke... He knew it was a replica looking exactly like him, how were they supposed to know it wasn't him? You can't really blame them, but in an emotionally charged situation like that, I think it'd probably be hard not to feel resentful anyway. He probably realizes on an intellectual level that his parents aren't to blame, but on an emotional level, he's still angry with them for somehow not knowing and essentially "abandoning" him. No one except Van is really to blame in this situation, but if you wanted to get deep into the psychology of it and really overanalyze a video game character the way I did when I first wrote this post in November, Asch could have been attached to Van in a perverse way. After all, part of the reason why Asch resented Luke was because they were both vying for Van's favor. You wouldn't vie for someone's favor if you resented them. However, being forcibly removed from your home and family still creates emotional problems, and if Van isn't blamed, then the resentment needs to be directed elsewhere. It's easy to pin it on Luke and his parents, even though none of it was their fault. Bottom line is when you're hurt or traumatized, your actions and feelings don't always make sense. It's kind of like how a severely wounded animal will lash out at its owner trying to help--they're in such pain and confusion that they just direct aggression at anyone and everyone nearby. edit: I hate it when people over-psychoanalyze video game characters, so I don't know why I did it here with the Patty Hearst comparison. Oh well.

Hmm..he'll annoy me at times, but he's still cool. 1.Arietta, 2. Natalia, 3. Everyone in the party but Guy, Ion, Tear, and Mieu around Akzeriuth, 4.Mohs, 5.Tear (before Akzeriuth) are the most characters i loathe.

then what about NOW? why did he had to fight Luke in the first place? I agree; Luke is a victim as much as Asch is. But emotions aren't rational. Asch realized it wasn't really Luke's fault, but even so, Luke was what prevented him from returning to his old life and served as a constant reminder of what Asch lost as a child. That association alone is enough to make a person who has lost everything hate you. It's not uncommon for a pregnant woman who miscarries to hate other women who manage to carry a pregnancy to term. It's not the other women's fault that that woman miscarried, but the woman might hate them anyway because they remind her of what she could have had but lost (a baby). It's the same concept as Asch hating Luke. It's not rational, but it happens.

Something like that. Not the sort of greedy jealousy, but the sorrowful kind of jealousy.

Originally, I really hated Asch. So, SO much. But if you think about his backstory and what he goes through throughout the game, his personality and attitude makes perfect sense. You'd be nasty too if you were kidnapped and cloned by a man you trusted when you were a little kid, then fought your way home only to find out that the clone had taken over your entire life and there's no way to ever get it back. He lost his family, friends, and his fiancee and any future he dreamed of having. Plus because of the replication process, your start slowly dying. And then you have to work with the very replica that stole your life to save the world.
So him being annoying makes perfect sense to me. Now for characters I hate, it would have to be Natalia. She's so damn annoying.

Yeah...exactly... It is all Van's fault for making Asch suffer so much and now Asch is full of jealousy and hatred just because of this bad experience and as child he was treated coldly by his father who knew he will die at Akzeriuth...So I dont hate him at all...

I'll be honest...I felt bad for Asch initially. I mean really bad. Poor guy, whole life stolen by an idiot. Luke, on the other hand, was the kind of guy who I expected to grow on me. It was obvious that he was playing a role, so to speak. Then time progressed, and it seemed that as Luke made more and more progress as a human being, Asch seemed to resent Luke more for trying to make it up to him than for taking it away. The idiot grew up and turned out to be one of those cute n' shy sweeties, and slowly but surely it was Asch who turned out to be the real idiot. Backwards or what? I lost my sympathies for Asch when he rejected Luke's attempt to reintroduce Asch to his parents. That's when it stopped being "poor little Asch" and started being "personal decision that he's gotta live with". He was an interesting character. He made the story enjoyable and I couldn't ever hate him, but in the end, I think I shouted up more "You Dummy!"s on Asch than I did on Luke. There's many themes in the game, but when it comes to Luke vs. Asch, there's a big nature vs. nurture thing going on. Both had the potential to be this big hero...only one of them really did anything with that opportunity. Allegorically as well as somewhat literally, they ARE the score in the game. I mean, sheesh Asch, working for your nemesis for HOW long before you actually decided to do something about it? It took running around and kidnapping your world's equivalent of the Pope (who by the way, outranks you in your own organization) to realize Van was an insane freak bent on destruction?
