What makes you feel like you're not writing good Lua code? I think it just comes down to the fact that I've never actually looked at other Lua projects, and I've never had my Lua code reviewed the same way I have with Python, Java or Rust for example. So I've been trying to figure out the "proper" way to use the tools the language offers myself. The reason I think I'm not writing good Lua code is that the game took me 8-ish hours to make, and a lot of it was me rethinking the core architecture, and I still had to settle on sub-optimal solutions because I wanted to finish it. So mostly just a lack of experience.
And also I think Lua code is just ugly to look at.
"Ruoska" is finnish for a whip, and "Tuonen Viemää" translates to something like... "taken by the god of the underworld"? Specifically referring to the god of the underworld in the context of Finnish folklore. So definitely a Finnish band. But can't say I've ever heard of them before. Which is not a surprise, considering how little I know about Finnish metal.

That makes sense. New languages always require a bit of "err how does this work ... wait that was wrong" finagling.
That sent me down an interesting rabbit hole on Finnish mythology. I had just assumed it would be a local derivation of Norse mythology. Apparently not at all.
I'm assuming toiling through Kalevala was a requisite in high school?
TBH, while I find comparative religion interesting, I never really liked Greek/Roman or Norse mythology very much. I liked the former better than the latter (there's more material, for one, and the denizens of Mt. Olympus were basically a dysfunctional Maury Povich soap opera), but I was never jazzed about it the way other people get.
The most interesting thing about Norse mythology, IMO, was how deeply it was interwoven into Nazism. Also, the Christianization of Norse mythology is pretty interesting, too. I intend to read up on the Christianization of Finland later.

Surprisingly enough, we weren't forced to read it. Some parts here and there sure. But I've never read it all the way through myself. I want to because it has inspired some other stories (Tolkien being one example). But it's not the easiest book to read, being a collection of separate songs/poems that have been collected together a long time ago.
I have to admit, I remember almost nothing about what they taught us about christianization in Finland. There is this story about a guy called Lalli who killed a bishop because he ate his bread or something like that, which basically everyone knows.

Is there any bit of Finnish history that schools like to beat to death in particular? I felt like we re-learned about the Pilgrims every year in school... I don't remember a single history class that went past the 1860s.
I've decided to move out, rent be damned, and find roommates. I filled out some questionnaire about myself on a rommate-finding site, including hobbies, and as per usual, I felt kinda lame filling mine out. Hiking, running, podcasts, reading (I don't list video games as an interest because, well... doesn't have a good connotation). I always feel so boring.
I was looking through roommate postings other people had filled out, and saw someone who said their hobbies are "watching a lot of Netflix." No other hobbies listed, even though they were fairly descriptive in other sections. Jeez. That sounds boring...

They didn't really repeat any particular subject too much. But I don't think pre-independence Finland was covered enough. At least I can't remember much of that. We spent a lot more time on world wars. Listing interests is always a pain in the a**. I always feel like I'm stretching the definition of a hobby when I start including things I do in the list, just to not make it seem like I'm the most boring person on the planet. ...And even then I wouldn't put "watching a lot of Netflix" on there.
Are you going to stay in NYC? Or move somewhere else? I was going to ask if it's hard to find roommate application in the same area, but then I realized the cities in the US are thousand times bigger than anything in here, so there's probably quite a few people looking for roommates as well. Finding good roommates might be another issue though.

Don't worry Joey: you sound infinitely more interesting than I do. What are your hobbies? Reading, Writing and Video Games. I think I'm one of the most boring people I know: at least you go hiking.

Another guy listed his hobbies as simply "go to gym". Boy.
I'm going to move to New Jersey, I think. It allows me to commute into the city for work if WFH ever ends, and it's more suburban. You can commute into the city from Connecticut, too, but it's less convenient and the towns adjacent to NYC tend to be significantly tonier. I don't work on Wall Street and I don't have a family, soooo.
I think writing is actually a pretty interesting hobby if someone cited that as one to me. I always find creative hobbies interesting. I'm not creative. I guess coding is creative, but I feel like I sound weird if I say that coding is a hobby. I think it's because most people can't relate to it. There are no follow-up questions you can ask if you say you like to code, unless you're in the field. If you say you write/paint/play music, people who don't engage in those hobbies can still ask meaningful questions about it. What do you write? What instrument do you play, etc.?
I also dislike saying I like to code because a follow-up is often "wow! you must be smart!", and I don't know how to respond to that. "Thanks" sounds pompous, and "No, I'm not" sounds overly modest. I usually just say "it's not really that hard, it's just logic or doing a sudoku puzzle" (which is true in a way) and move on, but I still cringe.

I think there's lots of follow-up to coding though. "What do you code?" for starters. Depending on the answer, you can get into some personal projects. Maybe they're not as flashy as "I wrote a book", but there's definitely still conversation there. Besides, anyone can write a book: not everyone can code. Besides, I love tech people. Derman has taken my stupid ideas and made them real on multiple occasions. Bless him... Hurry up and send me 1200 more dollars US Government: I need MORE MUSIC. MORE. MOOOOOOOOOOOOOOORE!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Confession: I've bought around 28 albums in the past two months. Pls help.
-edit- Well sh*t. Went to see something about how it changed avatars, and turns out it INSTANTLY overwrites your old one. My old picture was in my old pictures folder, which got wiped when I re-installed windows 10, so uh... sh*t. This is the closest thing I have to an avatar for the time being, so it's a placeholder until I get this shite figured out.
Don't ask.

That's exactly what happened to me when I changed my avatar to the serenading Snufkin. Didn't have the old avatar saved anywhere so had to use wayback machine to dig up old snapshots so I could get it back. I kinda want to go back to the weird Flynn again, and I think I've already wiped the backup I had from last time. So back to the wayback machine... EDIT: Nevermind, I found both the Snufkin and the Flynn. It's weird seeing you with something different after years of the same face. Yeah that's gonna be a factor for me as well as I'm considering moving. Even when it ends, it'll probably be heavily encouraged. I don't mind working remotely for some of the time. So I could see myself living somewhere a bit further away from the office (and uni hopefully won't be a factor for long), and only visiting a couple of days a week.
We could continue this circlejerk about who's interests are the least interesting forever, but I think reading, video games, coding and writing all have a lot of room for discussion, because there's so many different ways to do them. So we're all fine. Meanwhile, I don't think gym or netflix have anything deeper to offer. Those guys sound like cardboards to me.

Buying albums?? Man, when was the last time I bought an album? I can't even remember. I just use Spotify.
I'm thinking it might be time for me to change my avatar, but I don't have a ready replacement right now. It is getting a little old, though.
It is interesting how you associate online people with their avatar, though. It definitely influences my perception of people's personalities if I don't know them well. The transference of avatar==person doesn't happen if I know what the person looks like well. I couldn't even tell you what my offline friends' avatars are on Discord, although I could for my online friends in another Discord server.

Typically my defense would be that I don't listen to music while at my computer, but most frequently while out walking or driving (a.k.a. no internet access), but lately I actually listen almost exclusively on my computer with good headphones because the difference in quality is night-and-day.

I mean, some people still use VCRs on the regular... (although I can't imagine they're releasing on VHS anymore)

So Eddie Van Halen died. That really sucks because he was one of the pioneers of guitar-soloing. RIP.
Speaking of guitars, though, I finally picked up a 15-watt bass amp to fight back against the noise of the downstairs neighbors having sex. Well, that's not why I bought it, but hey at least I'm not lining a bass guitar into an electric guitar amp anymore.
So last week I decided to pick up a pack of cigarettes just because. Coworker said he thought I wasn't a smoker. Told him I'm a seasonal smoker, that I smoke while traveling and the like. Pick up a pack, smoke the whole pack, and not smoke for a year. Not really normal in that I'm not trying to form a habit, as I see cigarettes as more of a consumable like food.
How is it that people are already buying Christmas lights when it's only October? Like, come on guys, let the orange and black have its time.
