Not sure how many of you were aware, but for a while there was a 30-days-of-video-games thing going around facebook in which you answered a set of questions about your video gaming experiences. I've done it before a year ago or so, but I thought it might be interesting to do it again. Rather than pissing off everyone on my news feed with video game photos, might be interesting to do it forum-style. I don't think I'll bother with pictures, given that they'll just make the page really bloated.
The following are the 30 questions. I added nine more for the hell of it.
Anyway, here goes. I tried not to repeat games if I could.
1 - Very first video game.
Ms. Pacman
I got Ms. Pacman and Frogger at the same time Christmas 1998, along with a Gameboy Color. I was terrible at both games, sadly. I think I got to the third level of Ms. Pacman maybe once.
2 - Your favorite character.
Luke – Tales of the Abyss
Gonna have to go with Luke here. I know he annoys the piss out of a lot of people, but honestly, I think he’s the most well-written character out of all the RPGs I’ve played. One of my main complaints with RPG characters is that often, they don’t really seem to react to things the way I feel most people would. Luke actually does. I’d be pretty messed up if I killed 10,000 people solely because I was a spoiled idiot who never thought of anyone but myself, and I would feel even worse afterward if I discovered that everything I knew about myself was a lie, that I had inadvertently stolen someone else’s life, and also threw the entire world’s fate off-track. To hell with people who complain that Luke’s “emo.” You’d probably want to kill yourself, too! You don’t have to like Luke’s personality, but I think it’s hard to argue he’s not well-written.
3 - A game that is underrated.
The Legend of Zelda: Oracle of Ages and Seasons
It’s pretty hard to find people who have heard of these games, let alone played them, which is pretty unfortunate. Out of all the Zelda games I’ve played, I enjoyed these games the most by far. I can’t really point to any one thing about them that I love—they’re just fun. A lot of the Zelda games I’ve played feel lacking in character and vibrancy, but these games practically ooze it.
4 - Your guilty pleasure game.
Harvest Moon GB.
Every Harvest Moon game is an exact repeat of the ones before it. I suppose this wouldn’t be a problem if Harvest Moon was actually good or interesting, but it isn’t. The last Harvest Moon game I played, in fact, the Tale of Two Towns, was a horrible, miserable, soul-sucking experience that left me traumatized. Even so, I enjoyed playing this game last summer, and I was genuinely disappointed when my save file got glitched up. I would play it again if I had the opportunity to.
5 - Game character you feel you are most like (or wish you were).
I have no idea who I’m most like. No ideas.
6 - Most annoying character.
Mormo - Tales of the World: Radiant Mythology
Gonna have to go with Mormo here. I just really f**king hate Mormo. I literally can’t think of one redeeming quality for him. He’s just that terrible.
Mormo, however, basks in the light being the worst character ever withhhhhhhhhhhhhhh…
Mia from Phoenix Wright. She is an honest-to-God terrible person.
Shirley from ToL, Chip from Sonic Unleashed, and Toad are also very viable contenders for this spot.
7 - Favorite game couple.
Adachi x his hos
8 - Best soundtrack.
The Sims 1.
I think the Sims 1 is the only game I’ve ever played that had orchestrated music like that, and it just fit. Even though I’ve barely played the original Sims at all for almost a decade, I can still recall the music perfectly. I’ve spent just as much time, if not more, on The Sims 2 and Sims 3, but I can’t really remember the music from either.
9 - Saddest game scene.
I’m not sure what scene makes me sad. I was pretty upset when my neighbor drowned all of my Pikmin in the water while he was over at my house one time, though.
10 - Best gameplay.
Fire Emblem
I don’t really like the term “best gameplay” because there are so many different types, and I prefer different ones depending on my mood. That being said, Fire Emblem is one of the games I’ve enjoyed playing the most. The gameplay can be challenging and sometimes downright aggravating, but it’s always doable as long you give what you’re doing some serious thought. People rag on permadeath, but that, to me, is what makes the series good. In any other SRPG, I can have an absolutely retarded strategy and suffer little for it, but Fire Emblem doesn’t let me get away with that. What’s more, the game never lets you really feel safe, for a lack of a better term. You might think you have the mission in the bag, but there’s always that chance somebody might crit you, kill you, and force you to start over because of the permadeath.
11 - Gaming system of choice.
3DS.
Portability is the key to my heart. The PSP is also nice, but I don’t like taking it places because there’s nothing to protect the screen.
12 - A game everyone should play.
Civilization V
Everyone should know the joys of crushing the hopes and dreams of other young nations.
13 - A game you’ve played more than five times.
Math Blaster: In Search of Spot
This game would let you print out a certificate saying that you saved Spot and destroyed the alien kidnapper with your pro math skills. This is a big deal when you’re five years old.
15 - Post a screenshot from the game you’re playing right now.
Pokemon XD: Gale of Darkness
Just started playing this recently again. I played up until the final boss about seven years ago, and I figured I might as well finish the thing.
Also, that kid is really ugly. Just had to put that out there.
16 - Game with the best cut scenes.
Xenosaga Episode I
Xenosaga had some pretty cool cutscenes. Sort of had to, considering that’s all Xenosaga even was.
17 - Favorite antagonist.
Adachi – Persona 4
This is really hard. Really hard. I love my villains, after all. Still, I’m going to have to go with Tohru Adachi. I just love the guy.
18 - Favorite protagonist.
Pitt – Kid Icarus: Uprising
Luke would be my first choice, but since I already used him, Pitt it is. He’s just a happy-go-lucky guy!
19 - Picture of a game setting you wish you lived in.
Rollercoaster Tycoon
What can I say? I love theme parks and rollercoasters.
God forbid I end up in Sam’s theme park, though ;_; Sam might seem like a nice guy, but he created an inescapable “pit of doom” for visitors who complained about his park, decked out with only grossly overpriced food concessions and pay-to-use bathrooms.
20 - Favorite genre.
SRPG.
I like stories, and I like strategy. Perfect combo!
21 – A game with the best story.
Tales of the Abyss.
The plot itself is, true to Tales style, fairly mediocre, and there are multiple parts of the game that just flat-out don’t make a lot of sense or aren’t as well-explained as they could be. That being said, the game has the best character development out of any game I’ve played.
22 - A game sequel which disappointed you.
Golden Sun: Dark Dawn
To be fair, I don’t think Golden Sun was ever very good; nobody would even remember the games had they not been released on an RPG-starved system. Regardless, I think the first two were, at the very least, more interesting to play, and you at least had a set goal for the plot (stopping the lighthouses from being lit and then lighting all the lighthouses). Dark Dawn’s plot was dumb and all over the place.
23 - Game you think had the best graphics or art style.
Disgaea.
I like the character designs. Can’t really speak for much else in the game because I’ve barely played.
24 - Favorite classic game.
Not sure.
25 - A game you plan on playing.
Heroes of Ruin
Screw you, Hiro. It’ll be great >: ( 4-person local and online multiplayer RPG on a handheld system? What more could anyone ask for!
26 - Best voice acting.
Castle Shikigami 2
There are no words. Just look it up on youtube.
27 - Most epic scene ever.
Tales of Legendia
The Bantam Bouncers scene in Tales of Legendia. The rest of Legendia was entirely forgettable, but that scene was just… wat.
28 - Favorite game developer.
I don’t follow game developers… I just buy the games that look interesting to me. If I have to choose, I guess Nintendo? idk.
29 - A game you thought you wouldn’t like, but ended up loving.
WarioWare, Inc.: Mega Microgames!
The concept sounded pretty dumb, but holy shit, was this game addicting and fun. I wish I’d known about this game earlier.
30 - Your favorite game of all time.
Pokemon Red and Blue.
There are a lot of aspects of the game that leave something to be desired now, but I still think the game holds up well against time now. Even if it doesn’t, I still have a blast playing it and have very fond memories of it from my childhood.
31 – Funniest game scene.
Final Fantasy VII
I’m not gonna lie here; I thought the scene where Cloud turned into a vegetable was hilarious. So sue me.
32 – Game you’ve spent the most time on.
The Sims
If there were some way to see how many hours I’ve clocked over my lifetime on the Sims series, I’m pretty sure the number would be extremely depressing
33 – A game you honestly regret buying.
The Sims Medieval.
I was a fool. I bought this against my better judgment, and… to put it nicely, the game didn’t meet my low expectations. It went above and beyond, to the point where I am ashamed to even admit I own the game. Let’s just put it this way—the appeal of the Sims is its sandbox element. The Sims Medieval has Sims in the name, but it’s just a giant series of fetch quests with the Sims graphical engine and no sandbox element to be seen.
An honorable mention goes to Pokemon Battle Revolution. Every single person I’d ever talked to about the game said it was terrible. I bought it anyway. It was terrible.
34 – A game that failed to meet your expectations.
Spore
Spore sounded really neat when they first announced it, and to this day, I still think it had the beginnings of a great, really innovative game. The problem was, they watered Spore down so much in an attempt to make it more mainstream friendly that the game possessed no complexity at all. I was bored within an hour of playing, and the boredom never went away. I just can’t get into the game.
35 – A game that had a really interesting concept.
Half-Minute Hero
Wario Ware would be an excellent contender for this, but since I already used it, Half-Minute Hero. It’s an honest-to-god simple game, but it still manages to be challenging and ridiculously addicting. I recommend anyone who owns a PSP try it out.
36 – A game you can’t beat.
Super Mario Land 2: 6 Golden Coins
I did okay on this game until the three pigs boss, and then it all went downhill. 2D Mario games and I just don’t jive well together.
37 – A game you’d like to finish, but never got the opportunity to.
Skies of Arcadia
I’m not sure what I did with this game, but it was pretty fun. Too bad it costs an arm and a leg online now.
38 – A game you’ve cheated on.
Animal Crossing
I was renting the game and didn’t want to wait until the next day to get stuff done, so I messed with the Gamecube clock. I skipped a few days here and there, but then one day I decided I’d skip ahead a couple months.
Everyone in town hated me :‘(
39 – A game that aggravates you.
Pushmo
Really fun, innovative game, but some of the later puzzles are just akdgjkdsjgksjgjdj
Honorable mention goes to Elite Beat Agents. There’s nothing wrong with the game itself, and I like playing it. It’s just that I’m so bad at it. Pisses me off
