www.abyssalchronicles.com/The news and the trailer can be found on the homepage. Thoughts? I'm glad for the ENG release being so soon as it shows some commitment from Namco's earlier promises. Note: I am somewhat of an acting nonmod mod, so keep discussions civil. Any trifling nonsense will be "dealt" with. Excited. Even after all the backlash, new Tales is new Tales, so I'm looking forward to finally playing it and forming my own opinion.
Not a fan at all of the English voices. It could be that I watched so much of the game in Japanese that hearing a different voice come from the same mouth sounds wrong. I'll be using the Japanese voices for certain, which A+ to Bamco for offering that option. Dub fans have their dub, sub fans have their subs, everyone is happy!
I am a little disappointed that the date got pushed back from summer to fall, as classes will either be starting soon or in full-swing by then. It's not a big deal, but it would have been nice.
I've found my motivation for video games in general to be practically dead these past few months (which is why I haven't posted anything), so maybe this will be the boost I need to get back into enjoying games again.

Personally digging the voice direction for the dub so far, and the dual audio thing is good for both audiences since that appears to be a huge thing. Looks like Laura Bailey is voicing Alisha, and I believe Sorey is voiced by Orion Acaba. Mikleo gave me a huge Scott Menville vibe in his first line, but then the more he spoke the less I believed it was him. Don't know about Lailah but heard some people believe she's Erin Fitzgerald.
The localization train I'm all for, and I don't mind how long they take with it. I'm always under the impression that we Tales fans are (hopefully) patient considering how much we had to wait for localizations in the past. Those who are unable to wait... Well, play some Project X Zone if you haven't already and it'll come out when you're halfway through that game.
Of course, gameplay-wise I do have some warning flags before going in, but that's a whole different can of worms altogether. Overall, can't wait to play some freshly dubbed Tales again.

For me, the voice acting sounds fine/good. It may not be Vesperia/Persona 4 good in my book, but I like Sorey's enthusiasm, and the others don't sound too bad either. Laura Bailey isn't at her best in the trailer though, sounds a bit bland. Dunno if it is because of the character. I don't recognize any other actors, which is a good thing. Overall I like the actor/character combos.
The camera problems and minor battle system annoyances (from what I've heard) might be a little off-putting but I'm fairly sure I would enjoy the game regardless. The combat system looks decent, at least how the numbers/resource management work, but I like the variety in the character's fighting styles. There seems to be many artes with weird/non-traditional hitboxes so I expect a lot of fun combinations. The kamui system is a plus too. They should fix some of the most obvious graphical glitches and bugs before release though. Western audience can be very picky about that stuff.
The cast looks very good too. Most of them seem to be based on archetypes, but they still somehow stood out in the trailer. We're going to see some bromance, I hope. I'm a bit bothered by the name translations (Slay would've been a bit better name IMO), but I guess the dual-audio has something to do with it. It's a very minor problem really. I can see Kajitani-eizan ranting about the translations on his site (I should actually check if he has done it already). As long as it gets translated it's fine, it can't be worse than some of the first translations, and it's a lot better than no translation at all.
The soundtrack is excellent. Since I don't own PS3 yet (I've got more than enough reasons to get one over any other console) I might not play it just yet, but I can follow some let's plays and challenge runs hopefully. I can experience the story that way just fine.

So I wanted to expand a bit on my earlier statement in the Shoutbox. As I said in this thread, my issue with the voice acting is probably that I'm accustomed to hearing the Japanese voices, and so I've refrained from making any kind of statement about the quality. That said, I think "Sorey" sounded really bad. To this day I have no idea how they got "Sorey" from スレイ. Maybe they had their reasons, but I don't pretend to know. When watching anything related to the game before, naturally I heard "スレイ" rather than "Sorey". This trailer is the first time we've gotten to hear "Sorey", and I don't think the most talented VO in the world could have made it sound any less awkward. It's just not a name that "rolls of the tongue", so to speak. The result was me laughing. My statement wasn't meant as a jab at the voice acting, but I can see how one might interpret it that way, so I wanted to be a bit more clear.
- Oh, and unless I'm missing something the pre-order price on Amazon and Gamestop is currently $10 off.

I don't have enough Japanese knowledge to say anything about the initial Sorey, but I think the translated Sorey was to keep the dubbed and undubbed versions consistent. It would be weird if it was translated differently depending on if you had english or japanese audio. To be honest, the way they said Sorey really didn't bother me, but as a non-native english speaker it's to be expected. I'd actually like to see some foreign accents in video game dubs. Nothing extreme, but slight italian or french accent would not be too bad. I'm more bothered by the need to keep the japanese spelling instead of localizing them into legit western names. It's a minor annoyance though.
As a side note, I noticed how the characters look like their concept-art/box-art counterparts in game. I think the lighting and textures do it. It looks cool, the artstyle in general is pretty great in the game.

Indeed, I demand the next Tales game be dubbed completely by Canadians! I can't really comment so much on the art style because I'm too busy being excited that it's back to a strictly fantasy setting. I'm one of those really weird people who LOVES fantasy, but loathes Sci-Fi, so on a personal level I'm looking forward to Zestiria's cities and fields. Just... ya know... let's not go flying off to another planet near the end... please?
Also, as a little aside, スレイ breaks down into "Su-Re/Le-I". There is no distinct 'r' or 'l' sound in Japanese, which is why sometimes you see "Cress" or "Cless" from "クレス" (Ku-Re/Le-Su). What I find interesting is that they went with "SO-rey", because there is a distinct Katakana for "So": ソ. In reality there are actually quite a few ways to romanize スレイ: Slay, Sleigh, Surey (as long as you don't assume an 'sh' sound), and so on, but since there is no "ソ", I'm a little confused by "Sorey".
Oh dear, I've gone on a tangent... I'm far, faaaaaaar from an expert on Japanese, but there's your language lesson for the day. Hope somebody finds it as interesting as I do.
For somebody who has played the Japanese version, is it possible to change the controls? If there was a way to do so in the US release of Graces, I never figured it out, and I'm concerned that it might end up the same way with this one.

So they are using 'wrong' katakana for Sorey? So it could have been Surey/Suley as well? As far as the japanese dub goes they seem to be saying So instead of Su (as far as I can tell with my limited experience) , so I don't think it's a translation thing . Is there any vague translation for his name when it's spelled that way or is it just an attempt to translate Slay/Whatever to japanese audience? I can't come up with any meaning behind 'Slay' with my very basic knowledge of the game. The origin of Slay/Sleigh as a surname (from the first google search result): "The derivation in this instance, is twofold, being either from the Northern Middle English "sleght, slyght", smooth, slim, or from the Middle English "slegh, sleghth", craft, cunning, dexterity, both ultimately from the Old Norse." Doesn't tell me anything... Also, just out of curiosity, do the spelling of some katakana depend on the context or are they generally used/spelled the same way?

Katakana is generally used for words that are foreign to the Japanese language and names. Just to clarify a common misunderstanding, but Japan also named these characters Sorey, Mikleo, etc. It's just in Katakana, it was spelled Surei that way because of this alphabet. The pronunciations are different between both dialects because of this, but the name is the same in both languages.
While we have learned of Sorey's official name in an American trailer, Japan revealed the rest of the names on the official Zestiria site, which is why these names were originally decided by Japan, from what I understand.

I dunno if there is a correct answer short of asking the devs. Might be interesting to ask them how they create the character names if anyone gets a chance. I'm sure they'd appreciate any question that isn't "VESPERIA PS3?"

Regardless of the game itself I'm really impressed by Namco's localization efforts here. Dual audio and a relatively quick release are cool moves.

I have to agree. Namco is really trying to appease fans this time around. I'll give them credit for that.

The voices in the trailer were okay. Sorey's english voice lacks that easygoing appeal the japanese voice does. Mikleo was good and Alisha is great =03. For Lailah, I have mixed feelings; she's doing the lighthearted dialogue great, but I kiiiiiiinda feel like something's a bit off on the serious parts. Nonetheless, I'm sure I'll get used to all of the voices over time. I heard Rose will be voiced by Caitlin Glass, which I feel may be an excellent casting choice =03. Side note; there SURE is a lot of bromance in that trailer .

I hope they don't change the opening for the English release. It was very strange at first, but over time I actually really came to like the emphasis on rock over pop. It's one of my favourites, but I never want to have another incident like Abyss. What's the purpose of keeping the same song but removing the lyrics? It baffles me to the point where I want to say the no-no words.
