Pretty late to the party but oh my goodness am Im so damn excited for Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night. I've been playing some of the older Castlevania games recently to re-ignite my undying love for this series, and I'd love to hear you guys' experiences with the series.
Speaking of which check out the kickstarter for this hype af game:

The games closest to this 'igavania' thing I've played were one of the SNES castlevanias which I beat with my brother and Super Metroid which I still replay occasionally. I've been a bit disappointed by these metroidvanias that have come out recently, although some of them are good, just not as good as Super Metroid for me. I'm gonna blame the damn nostalgia goggles.
I've seen the hype (and the controversy...sometimes I just want to turn off internet) around Bloodstained kickstarter and I feel like I should pick up Symphony of the Night at some point. Sounds like a fun game. I doubt I'll be backing Bloodstained even if I happen to like SotN. I already backed Yooka-Laylee this month so one spiritual successor is enough for me.
The music in the series is good. That's like the only thing I can say about the series, other than the wall chickens. As usual, I'm more interested in the soundtrack of the game than anything else :/.
We need more gothic horror games though. Vampires are not used enough in the traditional environment these days, I've had enough of these modernization attempts.

What kind of controversy are you talking about...? Is it usual kickstarter-hate stuff? Just curious. The recent Metroidvania games aren't as imaginative in some ways but the action is really tight and they have really fun gimmicks in each title (except for Ecclesia i guess, but that one is so damn polished it's fine). And yeah the OST is brilliant ^^ This is one of my faves: www.youtube.com/watch?v=-_NwlONYM4Q

It has controversy? What about?
I'm terrible when it comes to the Castlevania series. I always meant to get into it, but so far I've only played the original and a demo for Symphony of the Night.

A few gaming blogs and news sites accused the Igavania kickstarter for misleading consumers about the real costs of a game. They claimed that the production of the game would cost a lot more than the initial kickstarter goal, which is true. These people also claim that Bloodstained was killing "actual indies" by making the game development look like an easy process and because they were outsourcing much of the actual development stuff. And lastly they claim Bloodstained kickstarter was used as a free advertisement more than anything.
Funny coincidence: Bloodstained is the first kickstarter project that has been so transparent about the costs and funding. The kickstart video clearly said the kickstarter was made to prove to some publishers that there's an audience for that type of game and that the game will have additional funding if the kickstarter succeeds. As for killing the actual indies, it was never an indie to begin with. Neither was Wasteland 2 if we start nitpicking.
The advertisement thing is understandable and I wouldn't be surprised if that was one of the motives for the kickstarter. I just do not really mind. I wouldn't have found out he was making a game without the kickstarter so for me it was a good thing.
Some minor accusations from a few major sites. They have kinda been sweeped under the rug at this point so it doesn't matter. Nothing too serious though.
Now that I've got that rant/explanation out of the way, I can say the castlevania soundtracks are damn good, and also excellent remix material. I don't really care much about the soundtracks of the newest titles, but the ones released like 3-5 years ago still had great soundtracks.
