New screenshots. I'm wondering if, like with Zestiria, they're trying to keep it mostly fantasy, with fewer modern/sci-fi elements? If so, that's fantastic for me, as I definitely prefer it that way (though most will probably disagree).
I think the most interesting thing though is the claim that it's "20% in development". I'm assuming this means it's 20% of the way through development, and not that 20% of the team is working on it. Either way, it points to a lengthy wait. Hearkening back to Derman's statement about the gap between game release and development conclusion, it's possible Berseria has been in the work for 6 (or more) months. Of course, production rates change throughout the process, but if we play for funsies and keep it consistent, that's roughly 2 1/2 years of dev time, with a 2017 release.

"Midgand". Yeah, because that doesn't sound COMPLETELY STUPID! No, I'm kidding, that's pretty much my reaction to a lot of these names when I first hear them. Usually they settle in and become acceptable, with the single exception of 'Boleteria'... that one just... ooof. Different game series though, so I'm sure Midgand will sound less silly in time. Also that looks like a regular ship, so I'm really starting to think the whole sky pirates this might be wishful thinking. (but if it turns out it wasn't, I'm totally going to claim to have said this on purpose in order to trick the universe (but, of course, I just jinxed it (and then counter jinxed it! (and then... uh... what were we talking about again?)))) The name reminded me of Midgar, from FFVII. And that comes from Norse mythology's "Midgard," which is only one letter different from Midgand. Actually, that makes a lot of sense given what they said about the extreme temperature differences in the north and south of Midgand, since Midgard is in between Niflheim--ice--and Muspelheim--fire. It's also completely surrounded by water. The more I think about this, the more I think the name Midgand comes from Midgard. Midgard was used in Phantasia, which had a lot of other Norse references such as the Valhalla plains and the whole Fenrir, Odin, and Thor thing.

Every new bit of information is making me dislike the protagonist more and more. The biggest problem is the new backstory they revealed and her "personality". With all that incident trauma making her all grumpy it sounds like they are somehow trying to justify her inability to think positively. Of course it's basically a form of depression, which is an acceptable character trait, but somehow I feel like Namco is going to pull off a generic "one person can make her smile" thing.
They could make the most out of it and build the character interactions around that grumpiness instead of just using it to make her cool. People would get annoyed by her negativity. Of course if her negativity is basically just Yuri's sarcasm and cynicism I don't see any problems but it wouldn't be too great either. I think this is Namco's chance to show me they can still write great character interactions. I still love the after-akzeriuth moment from Abyss, easily one of the best scenes from tales series.
I also find it funny that one of the game's plot elements is the world getting colder. No wonder Velvet wants to do something about it with that clothing. She would freeze.

I doubt they will go the Yuri 'sarcasm and cynicism' route if she's got "hatred and anger". It's funny, while typing in the shoutbox, I was literally thinking, "I wish we could get characters like Luke and Yuri again". Jude might have been okay if the second half of Xillia didn't get chopped off, but with what's there I find him, Asbel, Milla and Ludger to all be really generic* MCs. Sorey seems like the best of the bunch, but I haven't played Zesty yet, so I'm withholding judgement.
I don't like the word 'edgy', but this type of character doesn't do anything for me. In fact, I find it hard to sympathise with their cause 90% of the time, especially when the solution is to simply get over yourself. Part of me is kind of annoyed that, for their first female protagonist (seems to me from how everyone acted in Xillia 2, as well as Bamco's statements lately, they view Jude as the protagonist of Xillia 1) they went with THIS type of character. I could always be proven wrong - and hey, if I am they'll be all the better for subverting my expectations. That said, subverting edgy pirates is one hell of an uphill battle.
* Originally I had vanilla here, but then I remembered that I actually love vanilla, and that if I compared anything to vanilla it would need to be something which matches my love for vanilla, which very few things do. Vanilla.

"Edgy" was the word I was looking for when I was writing my post. Had to settle with "grumpy" because couldn't think of anything better.
I personally think Luke and Yuri are the best protagonists in pretty much any JRPG. I got attached to both of them and the interactions were great most of the time (I still think Yuri-Rita/Raven were a little shallow relationships, but that's not necessarily a bad thing). If they could raise the edgy Velvet to the same level, I'll voluntarily crap my pants. As you said, it's just hard to sympathise with someone who can't get over themselves, but as someone who knows some people suffering from depression I know it can be pretty hard to just let it go. Still it'd be interesting to see the characters to actually discuss Velvet's orientation problems.
I noticed some parallers with the Velvet's coldness starting few years ago and the climate getting colder a few years ago. Maybe I've just discovered an important plot element? "This woman who has shut out her kindness and has let her cold fury burn will soon become an existence big enough to shake this world." She's shaking the heat out of that world. We need a loli male(? just to keep the archetypes in order) to bring the kindness back to Velvet and restore the tropical islands!

Having suffered from depression myself, I know from personal experience that it's really hard to let it go. In fact, I hated myself more for NOT being able to, which only furthered the downward spiral. But I don't really get that most of these characters are depressed - just angry for really stupid reasons. Let's be honest - people get disproportionately upset over some really stupid stuff (*cough* Alisha *cough*). Having a character do that in a game might be 'realistic', but nobody is going to like them for it, unless it's played for comedic effect (because again, let's be honest, I'd be pretty pissed too if the world was getting colder and I was too dense to put on a jacket). Kind of a pity too, because if the protagonist was a grumpy old man who shook his wrinkled fist at every new-age thing he saw, I'd be so up for that.

I have the same feeling that they're gonna have that "only one person can make her smile" thing. Be it a male or female, I could care less at this point. That plot key is way over done. It's true its similar to Yuri's sarcasm and cynicism but that was also funny sometimes. I fear that there will be a lot of people not being able to relate to the protagonist, especially now its just only a girl. Which may make it harder for some "certain" types of people. The thing with Xillia, Jude and Milia shared the role......I duno I'm just saying there will be certain male fans complaining about the female role, and it'll be a deal breaker for those certain people if she's like super negative. I doubt they will go the Yuri 'sarcasm and cynicism' route if she's got "hatred and anger". It's funny, while typing in the shoutbox, I was literally thinking, "I wish we could get characters like Luke and Yuri again". Vanilla. Was I the only one who realllllly wanted a funny girl? Like at least dark humour or something? Random but if we're getting a male lead, I'm praying to God that we don't get some generic guy......oh please.....please. Having from dealing with depression as well, I can really relate to your comment. Tbh I'll be annoyed if they play depression as a comic relief, that's definitely a turn off for me. Unless she's just super grumpy, that's another story. But yeah, I would be wearing at least a hoodie or something. An old grumpy old man? Hope he's a looker! That sounds like fun lmao

I generally like the cynical characters in fiction, so going for that route would be a safe option if they really wanted to please me. I'd just prefer some originality or anything to distinguish Velvet from the rest of the protagonists. With the image they've been painting about the character I suspect we're going to see that refined sense of humor on her, if any sense of humor at all. Who knows. Having a cranky old man whining about the new sailing technology? "In my childhood we had to swim from island to another with the wares on our backs. And it was snowing all the time, one time we even froze still and had to wait for the next summer to melt us so we could continue." YES PLEASE! Give him a cane and back problems and make him super perverted, that's how older men traditionally behave in Japan, right? Honestly though, I'd really like to see a character like that.

My JP friend was able to breeze thru the game faster by just avoiding most of the story and was able to engage the latest cameo battle for Tales of Berseria. I won't say anything unless you wish to know via PM.

Everything I've heard so far about Berseria has been great. Of course, this is the one Tales I really wasn't all that hyped for. On one level I'm happy, but on another I feel like I can't trust myself anymore. Hype is a plague, I swear.

Most boring 2 years of my life. Unchecked hype is a bad thing, but like digitalis, a little bit is good for the heart.

Blind hype is something you really shouldn't be banking on but there is nothing wrong with hype in general... This kinda makes me want to change my old ways lol...
