So, I just finished the HD re-release. It was pretty fun. I still have lightning dodging and post game content to deal with, but I was curious about the thoughts of others on the game.

I played the HD re-release not too terribly long ago. I found the first 2/3rd of the game pretty enjoyable. Then the random encounters went from pretty well spaced out to insanely frequent, and switching everyone in and out to gain XP made what should have been quick fights a bit of a chore. Another chore were the bosses, and worst of all, the story went full pants-on-head (that wedding scene... lord have mercy). It's not uncommon for JRPGs to do this in the third act, but something about X's drove me up the wall. All in all, I was rushing to get through the game long before it was over.
Tangentially a lot of Final Fantasy games have very story-dense early sections, which then lead to normal middles, then relatively hasty third acts. I know Vesperia's third act gets beat on a lot, but I can't really think of a single FF that didn't go full bonkers/totally rushed at the end. Granted, I haven't finished 2,3,5,9 or 12.
I'm aware it sounds like I'm being super negative, but X-HD really annoyed me. Those first 2/3rd were solid. I know 'above-average' doesn't sound like high praise, but as a cynic towards video games, those 2/3rd caught me off guard. That last part really soiled the whole experience for me. A Random encounter at every other step, boss mechanics that lean toward annoying rather than strategic (with massive, unskippable cutscenes before them- OH MY GOD I HATE YUNALESCA SO MUCH) and rushed character development/story made it annoying. Funnily enough, I can tolerate 'bad' more than I can 'annoying'.
So yeah, I guess that's how I'd describe FFX. Above average start, good middle, and annoying/aggravating/irritating end.

Aye, the last segment, referring to Gagazet and the final dungeon, suffers from having an extremely high encounter rate. It has always felt to me that by that point the game expects the player to have 'No Encounters' by this point and for the player to have finished the "each character has a specific role to play" style gameplay. I powered through the last segment of the game with a team of Tidus, Auron, and Wakka through liberal use of Armor Break, Hastega, and Overdrives.
Plotwise I've always felt that X was... passable. I liked the main cast, with exception of Yuna and Kimahri, due to the two feeling like a satellite love interest and a guy who was kind of just... There. Wakka's Chappu plot fell to the wayside with his racism plot handled passably(?) and Lulu's past pilgrimages were barely explored. Rikku, Auron, and Tidus were my three favorite characters in the game, although this may just be bias towards character archetypes.
Gameplaywise, I only wiped against Seymour Flux due to forgetting about his last special, I remembered the gimmick with Yunalesca so she went well. My main annoyance is the cinematic wrapup fight with Yevon and how the fight is made entirely pointless by infinite autolife.
But then we have that bit of extreme cringiness from the 'Bonus Audio: FFX -Will-' That section literally hurt to listen to. :/

I enjoyed Final Fantasy X, but I was disappointed with its more linear nature. (Though it's much better than XIII in that regard.) When I got an airship and it was just a fast travel menu instead of something I could actually zoom around the map, that broke my heart.
The plot was decent, not as standout as other FF games to me, but interesting enough as I played.
What I really enjoyed was the leveling system. I LOVED the sphere grid. FFX is the only game where I ever engaged in level grinding not because I wanted to get stronger, but because I wanted more opportunities to use the sphere grid. Maybe it was the mixed sense of completion (filling in those nice little sections on the grid) with the ability to essentially change/merge classes.

I couldn't get too far into this game- Every scene with Tidus in it is too much for me. All the other characters are okay, but Tidus is so whiny and clueless that he's made this game unplayable for me. At least Vaan gets treated by the main cast like the clueless bit player he is, but people just randomly hand Tidus incredibly valuable items and assign him dangerous missions despite having every reason not to.
That's on top of the things I just plain don't like about it- the aesthetics, the awful menu designs (seriously? like the worst of all Dreamcast games. It feels like it should have a crappy browser built-in), the insanity of the infinite swimming segments, the absurd endgame sidequests...

Every time Tidus asserted that this was his story, I rolled my eyes a bit. I found his voice annoying, too. (When I looked up the Tales of Symphonia voice actors and saw him there, I just about died of shock. XD) Did you dislike Blitzball, too? I hated Blitzball. xD

Blitzball is really dumb. The whole opening sequence really strains the player- Introducing Tidus and then Blitzball and then wiping the setting clean and starting over... but then you meet Wakka and his Blitzball team! Yikes.
As an aside, Auron is so laughably out-of-place in the opening.
