I haven't really watched the Pokemon anime since 2000 (boy, does that make me feel ancient), around the Orange League season. I learned yesterday when I was over at a friend's that they totally revamped the art style (and, it seems, gave Ash a bit of a different personality?).
Thoughts? I actually kind of like the new style--it's a nice breath of fresh air--and Ash feels more like a kid and not some obnoxious anime hero. Of course, I only watched one episode, so it could change, but it seems promising. I could see how purists or people who actually watch the show might feel jilted, but I really think it's kind of refreshing. Apparently, James and Jessie appear in the new season, which is all that matters anyway.
Also, on a total side note, Ash's new voice actor has gotten much better. She actually sounds pretty similar to Veronica Taylor now.

I watched some of the first season stuff with my young cousin last summer and boy was it hard to watch. I doubt I'd have any problems with them changing Ash's personality whatsoever and the old artstyle doesn't tickle my nostalgia bones despite being a part of my childhood.
Just how many episodes of pokemon there are at this point? I guess it'll be a lot easier to hop in from the middle unlile One Piece etc. though.
Pokemon is actually one of the few series that gets a dub around here. I'm so used to the finnish voice that I don't even recognize his english voice when i hear it.

How are Finnish dubs, generally? I watched the first episode of Digimon in Finnish once... not because it was in Finnish in particular, but because it was so badly dubbed. It seems like a lot of smaller countries tend to have the same 10 or so voice actors over and over, and they're not even good. (The Greek dub, which I watched a few episodes of because I studied Modern Greek in college, was... err... not great? Kind of horrible?)
But yeah, I religiously watched Pokemon every day in 3rd grade, but I would struggle to sit through an episode now. I think about the show fondly because of nostalgia, but actually watching it, no thank you.
I will say that I appreciate Jessie and James much more as an adult than I did as a kid. I don't remember really having an opinion about them as a kid, but I think they are pretty great now.

It is true that we only have like 10-20 decent voice actors but most of the disney dubs we get are actually really good. I often prefer our dubs over the official voices since the script is just so good.
Its the children shows (like pokemon etc.) that are just really hard to watch dubbed. I'm not sure how many of the voice actors they use are actual children (I know some of them are/were), which could explain some of the bad acting but a lot of them are the same used in the big budget translations/dub.
TL;DR Most of the dubs are garbage, disney dubs are good.
