A lot of these kinds of articles are popping up all over the Internet on every gaming site imaginable, but I wanna get the common wo/man's opinion.
It doesn't have to be fair, or really in-depth, or anything of the sort. I'm not asking for the most well-made game, or the most popular. Just your favorite. And yes, there is a difference.
For me, it's gotta be The Crystal Bearers. You know, Final Fantasy? Crystal Chronicles? Yeah that one. It came out really late in the year (just a couple days ago even), but hey.
The whole experience of playing through it was just so utterly satisfying. Some reviews I had read foretold of the battling getting repetitive, or stale...and while it's a fair point, I never really felt the effects of it. The story was well-paced, shocking (but not so much that things felt random), and...as much as I try to stray from using this word, it gets undeniably and extremely epic. While it was a little short for my tastes, spending all night last night beating the game from start-to-finish was my highlight of the gaming year.
SO HEY ENOUGH ABOUT ME WHAT ABOUT YOU

SO HEY ENOUGH ABOUT ME WHAT ABOUT YOUWe don't get that until February 2010. XD I'd actually have to say that RM2 would be my choice. XD From the start of the year to the very end right now, it hasn't gotten boring, there's still enough content for me to do something different almost every-time time I play, it's eaten more hours out of my time than even ToS for a change. The best part is that it's the first game where I'm given 50 characters and more classes than I can use and still actually feel the need to hit triple digits on ALL of them. (Except Luke and Kongman XP) Also, I'm playing it right now, still trying to get the second set of Radiants for every class. ;D

I haven't played a lot of games from 2009, though I'm going to say Knights in the Nightmare is my favourite from this year (May change if I get NSMB Wii.).

Well, I'll say Street Fighter IV and Blazblue are my favorites that came out this year.
Street Fighter IV felt like a throwback to Street Fighter II and I wouldn't call that a bad thing. The jump to 3D graphics got people worried about it but if anything, getting a taste of the game last year assured me there was nothing to worry about. I was so excited for Street Fighter's return that I preordered the collector's edition of the game and don't regret it. It certainly did not disappoint when it came to consoles. It felt finely tuned and played great. It even ignited my fighting spirit again. Enough that I spent $180 on a TE Arcade Stick (and this is a collectible even).
On another note, I wasn't hyped up for Blazblue but because of how I got my arcade stick and everyone was talking about Blazblue (one person even asked me if playing Blazblue is what got me to buy a stick), I caved into it. It gradually grew for me to play Blazblue better, just like with Street Fighter IV. Fast paced, crazy action, and nicely tuned. It's great stuff.
2009 was definitely the revival of the fighting game genre if Street Fighter IV and Blazblue say anything about that and it certainly feels like it.

Melty Blood: Actress Again also came out (at least for the PS2, I think it was in Arcades by the end of '08) this year.

I don't think watching video's counts exactly. XD
But recently, I think I'm swaying over towards Another Code R: A Journey Into Lost Memories now. It's just such an easy game to pick up and play. XD And the story is amazing too, and all the puzzles make me go "wow, I solved that. O.O" at the end.

Pokemon Heartgold for me. Other than that, I haven't bought any games that were released this year.

Professor Layton and the Diabolical Box for me. Just finished this game today, and it has a great story (as was the first game as well) with some fun, challenging puzzles. It made me feel smarter!

BlazBlue for me. I really like almost everything in the game (eg. characters, music.)

Man, I don't even know what I own that came out this year... This ... Same, really. Uhh... I'll just go with Assassin's Creed II or Call of Duty: Modern Warfare II. ;; Since I love them hardcore, and I KNOW they were released this year. >_>
