Barring Phantasia and Destiny, in which everyone was a useless, drooling moron in battle, what AI did you find most reliable and least reliable? Abyss's AI seemed pretty sturdy to me. There was the whole issue with how Guy would rush from wherever he was on the field in order to get caught up in Van's attacks like it was his job or something every time I did the final battle, but for the most part, they were reliable. I didn't have to order them around much and could focus on myself. Jade in general was always solid. Now. Estelle. Screw her. The stupid woman would cast first aid when my entire party was dying, and when everyone was in excellent health, she'd spam Nightingale. When I turned First Aid and other useless attacks off, she'd rush off and attack enemies as everyone lay dying. I just couldn't win And Raine. Raineeeeeee. I don't know what this woman's problem is. Runs up to an enemy, tries casting in front of it, and then yells at me for not protecting her. Look, lady, it's not my problem if you're an idiot.

AI eh? I did like the Graces AI quite a lot. I never seemed to be low on health and my mages always seemed to keep a constant spam going. Though it might because I altered priorities in strategy, I thought it was the best I had seen.
I actually liked the quirks of the Symphonia AI. When strategy priorities were set to behave in character, Raine would get up in the face of any enemy that had its weakness exploited, Zelos would sync targets with any female character, Colette would stick with Lloyd, etc. It made them a tad impractical but I thought it was an interesting inclusion.
Innocence AI I hated (wonder if they fixed it in R). For whatever reason, damage and combo flags seemed had the same priority (if not higher) as healing. Maybe that worked in previous games, but when your healer can combo like a lunatic, that does happen to be a problem. Yes, Spada is dead on the ground, keep trying to combo that unflinchable boss. Innocence and its combos...

I had problems with Symphonia and Vesperia. RAINE. AND MOTHER FREAKING ESTELLE. ALWAYS SPAMMING NURSE OR REVITALIZE WHILE I'M LIKE IN THE HIGHEST OF HP. BUT SPAMMING FIRST AID WHILE NEAR DEATH. Ugh. I still have some problems with Cheria casting stupid spells.

Tales of the Abyss: "Cast Fonic Arte" is actually "All-out Attack" & "Artes only" is "Cast fonic Artes"....go figure
Tales of Vesperia: it seems the AI has waaaay troubles with Estelle because she never do what she's told....
other than that everything is fine....

Sophie was pretty good at balancing when to heal and when to fight.

I never had any problem with any AI. this. Except for that time when Jade decided to try being a melee fighter rather than a caster. I just switched him with Guy and never bother with him again.

The secret to the default tales AI is to just keep everybody's TP up. They're all hard-wired to burn as much TP as possible when it's high, but conserve TP to the detriment of themselves and others when it's below a certain amount. They'll rarely burn it out to 0 unless they're a pure melee character like Yuri or Karol. Toss a gel and Estelle/Rita/Jade/Tear/etc. will go right back to high level heals and attack spells.
Since the number of items you can have in the first playthrough is relatively low, the characters also tend not to use items as much as they *could*.
Kinda like how a blackberry will turn its own radio off when the battery is below a certain point.

The most reliable AI is Destiny's. I can rely on them to not do a damn thing, ever. Barring Phantasia and Destiny, in which everyone was a useless, drooling moron in battle, what AI did you find most reliable and least reliable? Phantasia, the game where you play as a slightly-mobile wall of metal and headband while your three spellcasters sit back and spam magic? The AI worked out pretty well there, I should think. It just became a problem when they copied that AI verbatim for Destiny, where your party is melee-oriented- thus having characters only attack when your hero isn't in front of them makes them into mindless statues. You could have just turned off his melee artes- though Jade is really quite competent in melee.
