What would the robots from FLCL be considered?

They're more like super robot enemies (Wasn't the one bot a direct reference to one of the buster machines from Diebuster?), so, supers.
Real robots won't ever be created in the form they're in in anime and such unless you can find an actual logical reason for them to exist. 'Because they're cool' is not logic.
I mean, who needs close-range weapons like that when you can just fire nuclears at people from across the planet?

Close range combat will always be the most effective type of combat. Having robots on your side would greatly affect the outcome of the battle. You won't see them in the actual battles yet only because of the current technology level, but I'm sure that they will become an important factor in the future wars.

Close Range combat is only most effective if you have minovsky particles on your side. Then there's no such thing as guided ranged weaponry.

Tough call. Does it count if there's a plot twist halfway through where it's revealed that they're actually bio-mechs?

I was wrong, Demonbane is the most ridiculous giant robot, but that's Demonbane.

Hmm, well, I usually use real robots in SRW and like the actual robots more, but I think I enjoy super robot shows a bit more. I dunno, I guess I just like the escapism and clearly defined sides when I just go to arbitrarily watch something.
My favorite mecha show is probably gonna always be Nadesico though.

I like both real robots and super robots...whether i like the anime or not, just depends on the quality.

I like both myself. I really want to expose myself to more mecha, anyways. Though, Super Robot shows have a lot of hot-blood, which makes them quite inspiring... Real Robot shows are often realistic and have pretty good plots with lots of action.
I... never really thought about which I like more. I probably need to watch more so I know which type I like the most.

Major Gilliam Yeager, nice of you to drop by. *smirk*
It's super robot for me. Reals are cool and all, but it's the Supers that can do the impossible and see the invisible.

True, but most super robots end up doing the same thing. I love the Nu Gundam, the Zeta Gundam, and the Aestivalises. I can't really think of any super robots I love. I mean like the actual robots though. Generally, for me, super robot pilots are more entertaining.

I generally prefer real, to be honest. The designs interest me more, and I just like a more... grounded approach to them. I do like super too, though. But given the choice, I'd go with real. XP

Since MGS uses currently existing technology in its mech (Well, the railgun is theoretically possible, just not built to that scale yet IRL), I'm gonna go with real. (y)

"The ones that can't figure out what they are". I picked this vote considering Evangelion is my favorite mecha anime. Still, I like a lot of mecha. I'm a Gundamnut and Geass fan. Has anyone here seen Fafner? Which would Fafner qualify as? Heroic Age is Super Robot... I think. Yep. I like them weird ones. Fafner's real robots I think.
