So, uh, yeah. Giant robots typically come in two flavors, Super Robots, and Real Robots (With, of course, a number that fall in between). Which do you prefer? For reference, Super Robots are, well, super-powered. There's usually a small number of relatively powerful protagonist mechs, with fantastic abilities- Rocket Punches, Eye beams, and special moves galore. The genre came first, with Mazinger Z being the first giant robot directly piloted by someone inside it (Although Tetsujin 28 and Astroboy preceded it as far as robots go). More recent shows would be, say, Yuusha-Oh GaoGaiGar and Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann. Real Robots, on the other hand, treat mechs as realistic tools of war. They typically used scaled-up versions of conventional weapons, swords and rifles, usually involving beams of some sort in them (Beam swords, beam rifles, beam... scythes? How does that work?). The first Real Robot series was Mobile Suit Gundam (And every Gundam, save for G Gundam, has been a real robot series), appearing after Go Nagai's Mazinger Z. More recent examples are, uh... I dunno, I think Code Geass is one. Eureka seveN, Fullmetal Panic!, etcetera. Me? I prefer Supers. They're usually hot-blooded, and much more fun. HIKARI NI NARE! Addendum: And Tekkamen are listed there just because Tekkaman Blade rocks like that. Even if they aren't really robots at all.

Both are amazing, but if I had to choose...Super Robot~ *drill that pierces the heavens~*
But I did enjoy Code Geass, GaoGaiGar, the Gundam Series and Eureka Seven very much~

GaoGaiGar is a fun super robot series, it really has the spirit of the old shows. Gurren Lagann takes that spirit and makes it ridiculous~.
Though, Tekkaman Blade will tell you that he was turning things into light way before Guy Shishioh was.

Sorry, I'm a fan of real robots, since I myself am a realistic person. I blame Battletech, as that really showed a more realistic view of the giant robot type of thing.

I prefer the realistic ones. Especially the ones from the Robotech/Super Dimensional Macross and Front Mission (Square-Enix SRPG game series) universe. And maybe even Metal Gear series' Metal Gear. I generally prefer realistic settings and believable situations after all

I like Real ones better... I don't know why =). I think it's the idea of getting to pilot one is what's affecting my decision XD

Real robots have more "plausible" functions, like retractable rollerblades (Geass) and Rocket boosters and all the stuff you'll need in space.
Super Robots are like in Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann where the robots do stuff that make you go "WTF", like when mechas fuse together with a buncha stuff (*coughtthemooncough*) and do a lot of really crazy things. Oh yeah, Galazy Jumping (as in stepping on Galaxies) = unplausible.

Usually, Super Robots fight with super-powered attacks- rocket punches, eye-beams, gigantic hammers that reduce things to photons. For the most part, they like to ignore the sci-fi aspect of the genre (Getter Robo barely even tries, for example, and Gurren Lagann obviously doesn't care.).
Real Robots, on the other hand, are armed with scaled-up versions of more realistic weaponry- hand-held machine guns, and knives and stuff. Usually they involve wars, and stuff, since Real Robots are much easier to produce and pilot, leading to larger numbers.
Supers are usually pretty rare, with only a handful on the entire planet in any given series (There are exceptions, but usually seeing a super robot is a pretty shocking thing, whereas seeing a real robot is more akin to seeing, say, a tank). Usually, they're much larger in scale.
Of course, this is just generalizations. Some super robot series take their mechanical designs seriously ([As seriously as Super Robots want to be, that is- they're usually very clearly supers; Ideon is the exception] GaoGaiGar, with its hard, realistic designs, even if it doesn't try to be as realistic as possible all the time), and some real robot designs are kind of fanciful (Escaflowne comes to mind).
Real robots are things of war, basically used as very large, more mobile tanks (Usually). Super Robots have different purposes and origins, but the most common thing is fighting some threat that can't be combated by conventional weaponry (Aliens, Dr. Hell's robot monsters, etcetera...). Basically, Reals have a realistic purpose, be it to be used in war to shoot people, or to as civil construction robots, as in Patlabor.
Personally, I think retractable rollerblades are kind of fantastic, myself... Especially since the Daitrombe has them.
...And Gurren Lagann is by and far the most ridiculous series ever. Not even Ideon was that ridiculous, and it destroyed the universe.

I won't vote for now I guess, because I would be biased if I just said real robots because I haven't actually watched any 'Super Robot' anime shows.
... I'll go hide now.
