The Silence, a German film about two young teen girls who get murdered by the same pedophile 23 years apart.
Very tense and dark. I think the ending was a little unsatisfying (they didn't catch the perp in the end), but at the same time, I guess it's kind of refreshing to not have a film resolve itself happily.

Okay, so, as an extra credit assignment for my Sociology class, I had to sit down and watch this Dutch(or atleast I think it's Dutch?) film called North Sea Texas. Or as I like to call it, Everyone Is A very *friendly* person. Why? Well, because the entire film is a cycle of lust between just about everybody.
The movie is about a boy named Pim, who is different from those around him. He's quiet, keeps to himself, likes to draw on drink coasters, and dreams of one day being the Beauty Queen that his female dog of a mother was in years past.
However, his life takes a bit of a turn when he falls in love with a friend of his named Gino. And they start f**king like jackrabbits.
No, seriously. They do it like five times in the span of less than a half hour.
What really gets me about the whole thing though is that the message is confusing.
If the film even has a message, then it's really muddled and poorly written. If it doesn't, then it introduces needless symbolism to try and be more than what it is.
Not to mention, while the actors are all good at body language, the characters themselves are written... weird. Like I said earlier, just about everyone has the hots for everyone else(no joke, they do). Which makes everyone a cheater if nothing else.
And even ignoring that, most of the cast is just plain unlikable. Gino ends up being a cheating douchebag, Pim has no personality unless it comes to Gino or the guy who's basically his stepfather(and who it's hinted Pim has a thing for, ew), infact the only sympathetic character is Gino's' mother, who's visibly mentally and physically suffering.
Plus there's alot of foreshadowing and subplots that go absolutely nowhere. For instance, they make a big deal out of this knife that Pim "acquires" as as present from Gino, and then the whole thing is just kinda dropped after awhile with it never being brought up again. Well okay then.
Considering that Gino and Pim get back together by the end(and of course, elope), then I guess the lesson we can learn from this is that it's okay if your significant other is an not a very nice person >( and does nothing but take advantage of you; They'll come around.
I'll give the movie this though, the cinematography itself was pretty nice. It helped make the movie seem less slow-paced than it actually was.
Overall, a 3/6. The whole experience is kinda just whatever.

That sounds like an... interesting film :X
I watched What's Eating Gilbert Grape the other day, which is a movie I'd been wanting to see for several years and had never gotten around to.
The film left me with mixed feelings. On one hand, it was terribly depressing, and that left me with a bit of a bad taste in my mouth. No, that's wrong. I'd say the film made me uncomfortable. The family was terribly dysfunctional, and I desperately wanted life to improve for all of the characters. While it's true the story doesn't end badly per se, it never gave me the ending I really wanted. So many of the issues the family struggled with were left unresolved.
But on the other hand, I liked that aspect of the film. It didn't need to feel good in order to convey something meaningful. Even as I disliked most of the characters, I could relate to and understand all of them. I thought the morbidly obese mother, for instance, was a sorry, pathetic excuse for a parent, but at the same time, I pitied her and totally got why she just sat on the couch all day and ate herself to death, quite literally. All of the characters were like that--dislikable, but so complex and rich that you couldn't help but feel for them anyway. The miserable way some of them acted made complete sense.
Leonardo DiCaprio's performance was truly amazing. I don't think I've ever been so impressed by an actor's performance. I already thought he was a great actor before watching the film, but no--that guy isn't just good. He's f**k**g talented. It's a crime he only got nominated for an award.

'Pi'
One of my favorite movies, it's one of those movies that I wouldn't mind watching many times, since I somehow get different conclusions and interpretations each time I watch it. Love the great acting, the overall feel, and the philosophical tones it had. I'm writing a paper about the movie's main character for my psychology assignment lol.

The Dictator.
Really good comedy! Wasn't expecting a whole lot going in, but it was smart and stupid in the proper ratio. Sharply-written, nothing felt forced or extraneous, and the titular character had about a dozen different over-the-top outfits all designed by one person. A movie in rare form.

Kontroll.
Sometimes, trippy, artsy, abstract indie films are refreshingly profound and thought-provoking. Other times, they just suck. Maybe I just missed the symbolism or something, but as far as I could tell, there wasn't any real point to this movie.
It won several awards and is well-rated online, though, so beats me.

Last few movies I watched:
Solyaris Safety Last The Great Dictator
I've been relaxing myself watching all these really old movies since most of the movies today are just sensory overloads that leaves little to the imagination.

Good Burger.
What a trip. So nineties!
It's also got good writing, cinematography, and there's actually practical effects in it! Oh, how I've missed you, practical effects.

Funny you should mention Good Burger. Two of my friends were telling me recently that I absolutely needed to watch it. I watched Wolf of Wall Street and Watership Down recently. Wolf of Wall Street was excellent. No, not even excellent--captivating. From the plot to the cinematography to the acting, everything was fantastic. Per usual, Leonardo DiCaprio gave a stunning performance. I went out and bought the book the next day. (The book's just as good, incidentally.) Watership Down... ehhhhhhhhhhh. My friend showed it to me because it's one of his favorite movies. I didn't have the heart to tell him I thought it was horribly boring. Maybe the book is good--I don't know, as I haven't read it--but the movie was not. I did like the bird, though. He was the only character in the entire movie voiced with personality. Everyone else was voiced by droning old British men who sounded about as excitable as someone in a coma.

Evangelion: 3.33 You Can (Not) Redo Watched that with my date, as she drove us 50 miles through LA traffic and we made it just in time. I was just laughing hysterically all the way, as it's quite a sight seeing a Hello Kitty-decorated car pushing 120mph and overtaking all these sports cars
