Hiro and I were discussing this on MSN, and I was wondering what others' take on it was.
Suppose a game has several levels: easy, medium, and hard. At what level does beating it "count"?
Or, say, Mario Kart. Is the game beaten when you've unlocked Mirror Mode, or only when you've gotten gold cups on everything, even on Mirror Mode?

Depends.
Some games are sandbox and therefor can never be truly "beaten" such as the Sims
In which case I consider it beat when I get bored of it.
While games like Fighters and Racers have a story mode/campaign type mode that you can beat.
As for RPGs and such, I consider it truly beaten once I 100% it.

I pretty much follow how the Backloggery has broken it up. Beaten generally means you've completed the story and viewed the ending credits. Completing means unlocking everything, collecting everything, beating the game on every difficulty, etc. Though, the Backloggery notes that getting the top rank (such as S) isn't neccessary unless it unlocks something. Though in the case of MK7, a racing game, I would think that completing it would be getting a gold trophy on every stage including mirror stages. Not an easy task!

Thankfully, getting Mirror Mode on MK7 is a million times easier than MK64, where you had to get 1st place on every single course (in a row per set) in order to unlock it. I've had the game since I was eight, and I have never been able to unlock Mirror Mode on it because I simply have never been able to get first place on 150CC on the third Special Cup course. I hate that course. So many sharp turns.

On a game like Elite Beat Agents or Ouendan, where the difficulty levels are so distinctly different, I wouldn't say you could call it beaten until you beat Hard mode. Easy mode is like 50cc mode of Mario Kart. Sure, you can say you've beaten Mario Kart once you finish 50cc, but what you've actually done is just practiced all the courses in the game. Same with EBA.

Dammit, Hiro, you're shaming me into trying to beat EBA on Normal after all.
I'm just so bad at it.
I guess for me, I determine beating a leveled game based on what I'm capable of. For instance, after beating Hard and letting the credits roll on Pokemon Puzzle League, you can unlock Very Hard and Super Hard. I've tried beating Very Hard, and... let's just say that I've lost so many times to the AI on that level, the game stopped keeping tally. (Needless to say, I haven't even bothered with Super Hard, since I know I could never, ever, ever be able to beat it. Ever. It would be a waste of my time to even try.) So, I just consider the game done at Hard. I tried my best.
Also, Zelar, if I went by your definition of "beating" sandbox games when I became bored with it, I'd have beaten Spore within an hour (I don't care if it was one of Will Wright's crowning achievements--that game was a drag). In Backloggery terms, I deem a sandbox game "Mastered" if I've played it for so long, I basically know the game like the back of my hand.

Like I said, you actually probably do -way- better on Normal than you did on Easy. I was really awful when I played Ouendan on Easy, but I moved up to Normal per my friend's suggestion and got way better.
I mean, your main problem is hitting too early, right? Which is only an issue on Easy.

Never play on easy modo in anything. It messes up your skills for the real game.
Be less terrible at Mario Kart.
A beatable game is beaten with the storyline is complete. Viewing the credits doesn't mean anything. It's the same as finishing a book.

A game is "beaten" when you've done all you can do and there is nothing left for you to do in-game. Well, that's just me babe.

To me, finishing the final stage/boss, regardless of difficulty. All that sidequest and miscellaneous in-game stuff are just perks to get you to come back and play a beaten game. I barely have much time to play anymore, so I just leave it at that.

Usually after I defeat the final boss, but at times there are replay bonus and more importantly, extra dungeons/bosses after getting through the final boss for the first time.
