Let's talk about and compare old school anime (pre-2000s, maybe early 2000s) to today's anime (early/mid-2000s - present). Which do you like better? Why? What are the significant changes on how anime is now compared to how it used to be? Like in design? Stories? Is there an increase or decline in quality? Etc.
I don't have definite answers myself, but one thing's for sure, I don't like nearly every anime being produced today.
For some time, I thought I was losing interest in anime, maybe "outgrowing it", since I couldn't get into the newer anime being produced these days. But after being re-introduced to a lot of good 90s anime by a friend, I realized that I've always been an anime fan... it's just that I can't stand the ones being made recently. And I feel it couldn't just be nostalgia alone that keeps me coming back to older stuff, since I'm watching 80s/90s anime that I never watched before, yet I still loved a lot of them.

Seems mostly the same to me. That is, most of anime is really terrible and not worth watching.

Old school anime.
Why? Everything is just too full of fanservice these days. You can't go through 10 seconds without a panty shot. The humor in old school anime is much better as well.
Jojo's bizzare adventure was a masterpiece. ZA WARUDO!

I prefer cel-shading to modern CG techniques. There's just a lot more expression in older anime art (well, when it's done well) and most anime these days is so clinical. Of course, CG can produce some fantastic and wonderful things, but in general I think most studios don't take advantage of it. Also cel-shaded stuff transfers to higher resolutions much, much better. Dancougar in HD looks absolutely fantastic. My favorite shows are a giant robot show from 1990 and a highly-stylized introspective novel-adaptation from 2010. I don't like nearly every anime being produced today. I think this has less to do with the overall quality of anime and more to do with the availability of bad anime. 90% of 90's and 80's anime was terrible. The 10% that's good, however, is what is remembered and picked up by later generations. These days every show, regardless of quality, is immediately translated and put out there. And so the truly great shows get lost in the flood- at least temporarily. The overall quality of anime hasn't changed, it's just much harder to pick up on the good stuff these days. Sturgeon's Law. 90% of everything is rubbish, regardless of year. Old school anime. Why? Everything is just too full of fanservice these days. You can't go through 10 seconds without a panty shot. The humor in old school anime is much better as well. Old school anime was also full of fanservice. Ever watch Space Battleship Yamato?

Jojo's bizzare adventure was a masterpiece. ZA WARUDO! I feel that's one main reason. They give in to what they know the fans (or the majority in general) already want, so they rehash the same characters, designs and plotlines, and just changes the settings and scenario. I prefer cel-shading to modern CG techniques. There's just a lot more expression in older anime art (well, when it's done well) and most anime these days is so clinical. And so the truly great shows get lost in the flood- at least temporarily. That's a good reason that I've heard a few times before. There was indeed total crap anime before, but I guess as with the rest of the world, tv shows or otherwise, technological advances and ease of producing things made it easier to multiply the number of crappy anime by tenfold. Still, even the newer anime a lot of people consider very good, I just couldn't get into most of them. I don't know the exact reason, but some things pop up in mind: Perhaps over reliance on CGI? Lack of beautiful, hand-drawn animation by awesome artists (as most animation are outsourced now)? Blander character designs? I felt quality somehow did take a hit, and most of the stuff now are to please established fans of certain genres and cash in on that rather than take risks to become unique, which tend to scare investors away. Right now, I'm just looking into the past stuff more and more, just like I also do with movies.

Maybe because I'm not an old geezer, but I do prefer new anime.
Yes, I do hate it more because it has a lot of fanservice, most of the times from the character I really hate.

Am I an old geezer now? hahah One likely reason for me is that it's hard for me to relate to all the stuff in anime today... that makes me feel old

This is the kind of thing I miss in modern animation. You just don't get the same texture, even on highly detailed OVA closeups. It's just a little too clean. Though, the few truly high-budget OVAs made these days do look pretty good. Dat Gouf, man. OVAs serve a different purpose than they did in the 80's and 90's, though, so we're not likely to see many super-gorgeous OVAs anymore.

I heard somewhere that there's nothing as high resolution as an actual animation cel. Scanning them digitally actually makes it look less impressive and have lower resolution compared to the an actual, physical cel. I have no idea where I've heard this though.

This is why older anime upscales better to higher resolutions. Blurays of some old shows look marvelous, but shows in the digital technique are drawn in one resolution, so they won't look any better if you upscale it.
These days everything is 1080p, but a lot of early 2000s anime really look bad on bluray.

it depends someones tastes...
