The newer models of the Wii can't play GC games, so I highly doubt it.

Well, the WiiU sold 55,000 units last month, after selling 57,000 in February and about the same amount in January. I think it's going the way of the Vita, sadly.
Its one saving grace that the Vita didn't have is first-party games. Most people I know who haven't gotten it yet are waiting for those to come out. The only problem is, I'm not sure if that'll be enough to resuscitate sales. By the time big name titles come out, third-party developers might not want to touch the system anymore.

It's quite possible that this generation has lasted so long that almost no one wants to progress to the next generation. With good reason too. With the PS3 and Xbox 360, what else can we improve on? The Wii was the only console lacking in hardware (Still had great games on the console though) and it's only now Nintendo decided to upgrade the hardware. Even the PS4 is getting very little hype.
The Wii U itself doesn't have that many eye-catching titles unfortunately. The console only has 3 or 4 games that I want and pretty much only one of them is out (MH3U). The other titles being Xenoblade 2(?), Super Smash Bros Wii U and Bayonetta 2.
Honestly, that's not saying much.

Hm, the 3DS faced a similar situation, sales-wise, early in its life. They both also have had several 3rd parties back down after early announcements.
...Though, the WiiU hasn't had anything as overblown as the MML3 fiasco.
I'm not as optimistic about the WiiU's future as I was about the 3DS, though. I feel like it's too obviously gimmicky to appeal to consumers. Certainly, it's about the same to 2013's consumers as the Wii was back when it released, but I'm not sure that such an odd thing can take off twice in the same manner. After all, everyone who got a wii for casual games still -has- a perfectly usable wii for casual stuff. On the other hand, Nintendo is attempting to appeal to a hardcore crowd, but there's not really a lot of hardcore presence on the system. A lot of it is shared with the 3DS (like the theoretical upcoming Smash Bros or Monster Hunter [which isn't even a system seller]) or are PS3/Xbox multiplats anyways.
Almost everything I can think of, like Bayonetta 2 or even all the theoretical 1st party games (New 3D Mario, Mario Kart, Smash Bros, etc), have no information out on them yet.

Poor poor vita. I still have high hopes for it, Sony just needs to get a killer app out on it before people figure out how to hack it. It needs Final fantasy or monster hunter or its not going anywhere. I really like the vita. It has a bunch of fun albeit obscure-to-mainstream games that just aren't the sort of things to move systems. It's actually been the thing I have played the most since I entered college.
Again with the Wii U, it's going to need a big exclusive killer app to take off. I know a bunch of stuff is in the pipeline, but it's going to need to come fast if it's going to sustain any of its launch momentum. The only thing that has my interest so far that has been revealed is the Xenoblade looking game they demoed at the last direct. I think the reason the wii did so well was because of the sheer novelty of motion controls. It's sort of a shame that motion controls in general got run into the ground.... This is not to say that the wii did not have good games, it did. However, it was just a handful among waves and waves of shoddily built budget games capitalizing on the fact that kids would have fun waving a controller around as long as the screen demonstrated some response. For years, I had held aloft the fictional title "Redneck Racing" as a representation of these sorts of poorly made moneygrabs. Then I happened to see a copy of a game called Redneck Racing sitting in a bargain bin one day and was stunned that something that incredibly generic actually existed.
The gimmick of the wii U is definitely its controller, but considering most uninformed parents don't even know that the wii u is different from the wii and is more than a controller, it's an identity problem for nintendo. It also doesn't help that microsoft outed a similar thing for normal tablets for the xbox the same day as the wii u reveal and that sony has been tinkering with this sort of thing for years already.
Lack of 3rd party support is definitely a problem. It looks like the wii U is going to miss that boat again as the next generation comes and games designed for the ps4 and nextbox pass based on insufficient hardware. Unreal engine 4 is already confirmed not to run and many developers will end up using that.
Now, smash bros will definitely generate a lot of appeal, though I think nintendo is shooting themself in the foot with a parallel 3ds release. Who knows? They might generate more end profit by pushing that version over the wii u one
I dunno nintendo, I dunno.

The controller itself is the main appeal of the Wii U but when you take into consideration that each Wii U tablet costs around $199 by itself (According to EB games AU), not many people are going to bite. The Wii U games that have multiplayer capabilities use 1 Wii U tablet and 4 Wii remotes which is nice when taking into consideration the huge price tag on the Wii U tablet. It's when they start having multiplayer games that use 2 or more tablets the problems show up.
On the subject of the Vita, the console does have quite a few great exclusives. I feel that it's slowly getting back on it's feet because the library of games is growing. Gravity Rush, Soul Sacrifice, Ragnarok Odyssey and Ys Celceta are great Vita exclusives. Though the library is much bigger in Japan with Zero no Kiseki Evolution, Lord of Apocolypse, Tales of Hearts R and Orgarhythm. The game selection is much better than it was at launch I'll tell you that much.

Hmn, looking at sales of the Vita in both Japan and the West, it still hasn't picked up much at all.
Toukiden looks pretty cool, as far as upcoming exclusives go.

The gimmick of the wii U is definitely its controller, but considering most uninformed parents don't even know that the wii u is different from the wii and is more than a controller, it's an identity problem for nintendo. Yeah, I've heard this point brought up before. On one hand, it's pretty nice not having to buy all new controllers, but yeah, it does lead up to uninformed consumers not being able to tell the difference. Honestly, though, I don't think that has to be an insurmountable problem. What's going to move the system is new games, and God knows there haven't been any. I got a WiiU for Christmas and haven't bought a single game for it since I got it... not for lack of funds, but because there's just nothing to buy. I'm sure Nintendo was trying to seize potential profits from releasing their console before the other two, but it just doesn't work if you don't release any games with it... They should have just waited until more games were ready, imo.

Er, Wii U marketing problems aside, I bought myself a Wii U, and I'm super excited for the titles coming out for it. Also, Earthbound for Virtual Console! I can finally play through the game without emulating it on a computer. :'D
