I'm sure some of us here are constantly reminded of games that we haven't finished yet (thanks to friends, Backloggery, the games staring at you from the shelf, etc). I thought it would be interesting to see if people can compile a list of video games which they absolutely must play in their lifetime. These can be either games you have played but haven't finished or games that have been released but you just haven't picked up. (I'm not including games that haven't been released yet.)
I'm going to do a top five for each category for my list (Feel free to reuse this.):
Played but haven't finished: 5. Megaman 9 (Wii VC) Never made it past the Wily stages, especially because of stage 3, third boss. 4. Final Fantasy VI Stopped near the end of the game. Not cool. 3. LoZ: Oracle games (GBC) I had owned OoA once and I made it about halfway through the game. I'll be honest, the game was a little dull to me, and so later I sold it. I regret that decision now. 2. Final Fantasy VII (Playstation) I've had to restart this game multiple times because of long absences mixed with losing save data. I've never made it past the first disc. Additionally, I've already been a victim to the major spoilers in the game (yay!), which discourages me from playing. (That and I don't own a copy anymore.) 1. Castlevania (NES) Actually, I had played this not to long ago, however, I stopped at the stage with Death. Incredibly long and arduous stage in my opinion. As a Castlevania fan, I am surprised by how I have not yet finished this game.
Haven't picked up but want to play (excluding games to be released): 5. Xenoblade Chronicles 4. Dark Cloud 2 3. Fire Emblem: Thracia 776 Rare game that has never been released in English (and probably never will be). 2. Tales of Vesperia What?! You haven't played Vesperia?! Unfortunately, no. I've known about it long before it's release and, quite ironically, haven't played it long after it's release. 1. Fire Emblem: Awakening Nothing to say here. Played but haven't finished: 5. Cross Edge I actually never made it past the Prinny boss... If that's what you can call a boss in this game. 4. Ys Celceta: Sea of Trees I actually got very into this but suddenly stopped because I got into my MMO phase. 3. Star Fox Adventures I just stopped randomly actually. I don't know why. 2. Persona 3 It was one of the games where if I got stuck I stopped for months. When I started playing and got past the boss I was stuck at, I stopped again. 1. Sonic Heroes I really couldn't be bothered completing the special stages for the emeralds. I really couldn't.
Haven't picked up but want to play (excluding games to be released): 5. Fire Emblem: Path of Radiance Yeah, I've been quite curious about this and Radiant Dawn 4. Fire Emblem: Radiant Dawn 3. Ace Attorney: Dual Destinies Oh man. I want to play this game so bad. 2. Custom Robo Battle Revolution I really enjoyed Custom Robo Arena as a child and when I heard about the gamecube version I was ecstatic. But then I heard it was never released in Australia. Curse you NoE. 1. Tales of Destiny: Director's cut Like many, I love the Tales series and from what I see and hear about this game, it's essentially the holy grail of the series. Curse you region locking PS2.
By the way Umbra, you're really missing out on Awakening...

3. Star Fox Adventures I just stopped randomly actually. I don't know why. Probably because the game was sort of a departure from Star Fox? I actually finished the game, despite the game not feeling much like a Star Fox game. Ah, but you need to collect those emeralds to discover what the game is about. Speaking of Destiny, I forget to add that to my list--the first game, anyway. I just kind of stopped half-way, just after a big turn-around. I don't know why I do things like that. sjdfnkwneufndkjnfjdnufdfn!!

I haven't actually played any of the previous Star Fox games. I actually enjoyed Star Fox Adventures though. It's been years since I last played it, it's most likely that more games came around and I just went onto those rather than finishing it. Funny thing though, I had to think about what games to put on that list and it reminded me of them. I should go back to finishing those games... One day.

To be honest, I think I've sort of missed out on game series, more than on specific games. Particularly, Final Fantasy, The Legend of Zelda, Fire Emble, the old Tales games, and some classics like Chrono Trigger. I can't really think of others at the moment.

The Legend of Zelda: Oracle of Seasons This is actually one of my all-time favorite games, and I did at least two or three playthroughs as a kid… up until the final boss, anyway. I could never beat him as a kid, and that’s always really bugged me. Ages is great, but it’s just not Seasons. The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess I thought this game was really mediocre, but I’m in the final dungeon and have been for at least six or seven years. There’s really no good reason why I shouldn’t finish. (Well, aside from the fact that I can’t find the memory card, but I’m holding out hope it’ll resurface… I can assure you I don’t care about TP so much that I would replay the entire thing, though.) Skies of Arcadia, Star Ocean 3, and Final Fantasy X Liked all three games, but dropped and never picked back up for no reason. The Legend of Zelda: Majora’s Mask This game is a million times better than OoT. So much more character and personality. I don’t know why I’ve beaten OoT twice and this game never. Tales of Destiny (PSX), Legendia, Graces, and Rebirth. Special shout-out to Rebirth… great game. It’s just that dealing with moonspeak is a hassle. Graces and Destiny I’ve already started, just need to finish. Legendia I’ve technically already done the MQ for, but I hated the game, didn’t do the CQs, and deleted my save file. I want to give the game a second try and see if I like it better. Grandia III and Final Fantasy VII. Same story for both games. Mediocre games at best, but I mean, I’m at the end of the final dungeons of each… there's kind of no reason not to finish. Radiata Stories. Great game, but you’re SOL if you don’t level up appropriately. I have to start over because the next boss grabbed me, snapped me in two, chewed me up, spat me out, and then mopped the floor with me. And I literally can’t spend time elsewhere leveling up because of the way time passes in the game, soo… yeah Xenosaga I. I’m so conflicted about finishing this game. I hate the battle system. In fact, I think it’s downright awful. I always cite this game as a prime example of a game I’ll never finish, but for some inexplicable reason, deep down, I feel like I really should

To me, this is more of a case of games I want localized. With that said... Haven't picked up but want to playALL Japan-only Tales games Front Mission 5 - PS2 (aka the reason why I went "#@$% Square-Enix!" - I hated them for not localizing this gem!) Garouden Breakblow : Fist or Twist (What I consider the best fighting game ever). As for games I have played, but haven't finished... I probably didn't finish them for a reason, and is less likely to go back to them thanks to me being a lot more busy and impatient nowadays.

Symphonia of the Night, for sure. I need a PS1... or at least a way to emulate it.
I also hear really good things about Eternal Sonata. Should try that too.

- FFIV: The After Years (Played it about a year ago, never finished because my PSP met an untimely end...) Also, hardest FF game I've played so far lol. - FFIII (Played the DS remake when I was younger, never finished it because my DS met an untimely end...)
I have a really bad streak of clumsily "breaking" consoles, usually handhelds, in the midst of a jRPG :( As it stands, those are the only two mothership FF titles I haven't played yet and it's really bothering me that I have them sitting here untouched after so many years.
