I'd post the sig tutorial that got me into graphics work, but it's on my hard drive back home, so I'll post it when I get back.
A tutorial directory is a good idea. I'll make this a sticky. Also, maybe the first post should have a master list of all the posted tutorials.

Yes, she's good. But kind too. She helps me with some icons sometimes, and she let us put up all her Tales icons in the site's gallery XD

I have a tutorial but I can't be asked to link right now so I'll type it up based on memory: How to make an artificial lightning effect- Create a new PSD file to any size of your liking, RGB color, 8 bit, Background contents white.
- With the layer window, right click the background layer and click "Layer from Background"
- Press the D and G key. Make sure it is on Gradient instead of paint bucket.
- While holding the shift key, click and drag from about 1/3 in to about 2/3 and then release (the lightning will be in a direction depending what angle your gradient is).
- Filter->Render->Difference Clouds
- Ctrl+I
- Ctrl+L
- Change the numbers to be 120, 0.25 and 255 (you may adjust to your liking)
- So far so good but a little colour wouldn't hurt so Ctrl+U then in the small window, click colorize or push the "O" key
- Adjust the top one to what your favourite colour is and the middle one to be 40 or higher.
As a little extra, if you use Ctrl+N and create another one, you can overlay by changing the front layer(s) to be on Lighten or Lighter Color.
