I just recently finished another playthrough of Abyss and I have some questions about the grade shop. Particularly the 'Combos' option. I've never actually tried using it in any of the games I played, so I have no idea if it is worth taking or not. Is that a better choice over 10x EXP for my situation?
I played as Guy most of the time so I abused Severing Wind+Void Tempest for the FOF arte. Difficulty wise my combos would be: ~25 on Normal, and Hard, ~50 for Mania and ~75 for Unknown. Is that average on Unknown sufficient enough to make the gains from 'Combos' high enough to go over the amount I would get from 10x? Or do I need to go even bigger with my combos to get a higher amount? Another thing that I wanted to know was if this modifier only counted the single highest combo executed during battle when calculating the exp or if it would also count any other high combos performed in battle (ex: I get a 33 hit and a 25 hit in the same battle).
So, bottom line: Is the difference in exp I receive going to justify spamming Dragon Tempest in almost every battle I do?

The modifier for the 'Combos' option(in Abyss at least) makes it so that for every 10 hits in a combo, your modifier goes up.
For instance: 10 hits = x1 20 hits = x2 30 hits = x3 Etc.
If you wanted to match the 10x EXP in shop that'd mean getting a 100 hit combo in every fight. Additionally, the games engine(if I remember correctly) only registers your highest combo for the multiplier.

Additionally, inactive party members do not gain bonus EXP. Since the Combos option only affects the bonus EXP you gain, it will become harder to manage your party's levels.

I have Very Hard Combo EXP run going on ATM. The exp depends on the highest combo of the battle, not the number of total hits etc. I got roughly 80 hit combos on most bosses without much trouble and usually used weaker weapons on normal encounters to get at least 50 hits. I had to grind to kill the first Sword Dancer and the first Kaiser Dist because of its high armor. Still, i feel like the EXP gain has been enough for Very Hard. the biggest problem might be the lack of EXP for members outside the party, but if you feel like you can solo/play with consistent party then it shouldn't be much of a problem.

I did the combo bonus for my second playthrough and it made Very Hard possible without being stupid easy. I've never done 10x EXP on any of the Tales games though, so I don't know what that's like.

10x can be broken or balanced depending on player style. 10x works if you like to get through the story quickly without all of the random encounters. Just going off of boss EXP will make end-game parties only be about 10 levels higher than a default run. I always go 10x for the most part.
