No, backstep isn't useful in all situations since it's possible to get hit, since it needs to be used before your enemy begins to attack (or before). Side Step, however, is not, as it is used just before you get hit.

Well, if you had invincibility on the start up of the backstep like in recent fighting games...
Anyway, even if you have terrible timing with the sidestep, it looks like the move has armor or invincibility. Maybe it'll act like Escape Air and Geneijin.

Also, the backstep was easy to get hit during, didn't cover enough space to dodge most artes, and put you just a bit further back than your weapon could reach. XD
Sidestep = doesn't seem to be showing such problems.

Personally, Free Run, albiet fun, was way too broken, you can easily end up stalling a match out by running away and using items, sort of stales the fun factor, I'm actually in favor of this system, the sidestep allows you to avoid attacks easy and still kick tail, I also love the attacks, so flashy and over the top.
I'm looking forward to this game's change of things, I suspect epic boss fights that run on par with Vesperia.

Heh, I remember the 1 on 1 fights in Radiant Mythology. As soon as you see the arte label on the screen, free run in any direction and you'll never get hit!

Not exactly. And RM2 balanced it out well that with timed response delays.

RM2 is just so much better than the first game.
Anyway, it's not like it matters if free run is broken or not. These aren't fighting games. I just like to have some kind of ability to change the line on which I'm fighting. Graces does that so I'm happy.

It doesn't matter to you. I care that free run is retard broken, it's not fun going on youtube to show a video to someone who is interested in the game, just to see either power runs or epic boss fights where the player does nothing but free run and use items, I wanna see action, part of why Symphonia is still my favorite, ready or not, you're gonna fight.

Kinda like Kevassa's? He does TotA with no free-run, no items and no death. Now that's action .

Play it however you want. No one's making you use free run. It's not like anything is really on the line. I don't even use it that much unless my whole party died or I'm Repede.

Free Run made the Tales World too easy. Side-step, please.

Well, to be totally honest, I never used free run all that much except for in RM1 where it was set to the joystick and most convenient to use.
I guess this thread should now be called "Free Run's Unofficial Funeral" or something like that. I'll add a poll

i ended up using free run to dodge in dotnw... anyway, i think the sidstep thing will work nicely with my style: 1,2,3,artes,move, repeat. which is what makes the older battle systems dry after awhile...
Which is why I'm going to praise the style change thingy. if done correctly, it will lead to variance, and variance=good.

Well, remember, Graces is using Chain Cap. You can basically do whatever you want with regards to attacking as long as you have enough CC left.
