What is the general opinion regarding the new battle system?
It has the new "around step" feature used to maneuver the field and dodge enemy attacks. It has an energy feature called the "Arles Pot" to synthesize items and food in mid battle, similar to that used in the Tales of Destiny Remake. The "Shift Style" battle system to utilize drastically different classes of attacks. And probably some more I'm forgetting.
My opinion? I was shocked to find that Free Run wasn't an option, yet I think that the rest of the enhancements will make up for it

They don't have free run so that the side step would get used.

I think Side Step is easier than free run in terms of dodging attacks. However, I liked free run in that I could run away and use items/cast.

it's more like Onimusha more than a Tales game......I think most Players are mostly used to the Free Run....or would they make it one-line?

It's a 3D area, like ToS, not one line, that'd be a 2D game.
lrn 2 logic.

So far, the battle system seems to be like a cross between the Tales of Destiny PS2 remake and Symphonia (so long as you can't leave the plane of the enemy)

But, you can. That's what the sidestep is. I just think it's Destiny Remake's adapted to 3d.

Thats not what I meant. Like in Symphonia, it seems if you happen to somehow to get pushed from the plane formed by your movements and the enemy, the plane shifts so you still face the enemy straight on. In the games with free run, you can break from the plane and move in whichever direction you choose until you release the button. Around Step just quickly swivels the plane around the enemy to avoid attacks.
What I was implying in the earlier post was that you'd have less movement range than say Abyss or Vesperia. No doubt, Graces is still going to be awesome no matter what the battle system.
An additional note, if Graces is compatible with Classic Pro controllers, will the gamecube controller work too?

Well, like I said, if there was free run, there'd be no point to the side step. Namco's never going to have a 3d tales game locked into a plane again after Symphonia.
I remember seeing an option for gamecube controller somewhere. Maybe I imagined it.

I think it's good that they try new stuff. They seem to have put a lot of thoughts in their new system, so it can't be bad, right?

It reduces the mindless button mashing, I mean, you have to pay attention and counting on your reflex to dodge enemies, right?

I usually just free run out of the way of attacks, but it would be cool to have a movement specifically designed for dodging
