Okay, there are some people here that probably bought certain systems for certain reason, so let's drop the question in front of us.
So, what sold you on the gaming systems you got?
With the exception of "Modifying a PS2 to play Tales of Destiny 2", none of my reasons are actually Tales related. For me:
*PS2: Metal Gear Solid 2 and Final Fantasy X. Two of the highly anticipated games in the system's early life span. I actually liked Metal Gear Solid 2, despite the polarizing opinions of the installment (especially over Raiden) while Final Fantasy X got me disappointed that I turned my back to the series for some time, while playing FFXII got me to stop hating it but knowing I'm not as big of a Final Fantasy fan as I used to be. (However, Final Fantasy XIII is actually the first time in a long time I'm excited for a Final Fantasy game)
*Gamecube: At the time, I was still worshipping Nintendo a plenty so I bought it mainly for the Nintendo games.
*Xbox: Jet Set Radio Future. This is actually my favorite game on Microsoft's first stab in the console business and I loved it so much that I remember stating it as my only reason to own an Xbox. I first played it by renting it (since it looked cool) after I got on school break along with the first Halo (to see what people were talking about) and taking over my sister's Xbox enough that I ended up taking it to my room. After the rental session, I ended up hearing that the game was going to be discontinued and my sister bought the game. Amazingly, when she moved out on her own and took her Xbox with her, she mentioned she bought the game for me and I actually own the game. Pretty much, I had to get my own Xbox to continue being able to play it. Considering it took me up to the end of 2007 to get into Halo, I can say that I can actually recommend a game on the original Xbox that isn't Halo. Note to Sega: Make it available on the Xbox Live Marketplace, like with other original Xbox games! That way, it'll be easier to convince others to play it! Besides, why is Sonic 2006 and Sonic Unleashed available there but not Jet Set Radio Future?! This game just reminds me of Sega's better days.
*DS: This was a Christmas gift gotten for me before I even released my Christmas list to my parents back in 2004. Interestingly enough, this was on my list, despite everyone questioning Nintendo's idea of releasing something like this. Somehow, I thought the touch screen had an easier time of catching on.
*PSP: Unexpectedly bought on its North America's release day without even trying (I still have the Spiderman 2 UMD movie that came with it). Lumines ended up having to wait for a couple of days since the store I bought it at didn't have games I'm interested in.
*Wii: Caught up over the motion control bit that I even decided to play Twilight Princess on Wii rather than Gamecube.
*Xbox 360: Eternal Sonata ended up being a reason but I ended up not liking it to the point that I told my PS3 owning sister+friend to not bother with the game and the port that was coming at the time. However, I ended up warming up to Halo by the time I got my Xbox 360 and I also still wanted to see Capcom's zombie game for the system, Dead Rising, and ended up becoming a favorite of mine on the system (enough that I have to have Frank West as my current avatar and mentioning in another topic that I would love to see Raven from Tales of Vesperia dressed as Frank West).

Gameboy Pocket- for pokemon
GBA- I don't remember. Probably because my cousins got it.
DS Lite- I got it from a friend. I wanted it for FF3
PSP- for Tales games.
N64- a Christmas present for the family
PSX- inherited it from my brother who bought a PS2. I wanted it to play Spyro 2 on.
GCN- I bought it originally for LoZ:TP. It's also the system that got me into the Tales series (hello, Symphonia)
PS2- I bought it for Abyss. I had two other games for the system when I bought it though (Shadow Hearts and SH2)
Wii- I bought it around launch because I had the opportunity to buy one and they were so hard to find, so I thought I should get one while I could. I use it mostly for kor and brawl, but there are a slew of games out and coming out for it that I want to pick up as soon as I can.
X360- got from a friend who upgraded to the Elite. I wanted it for Vesperia. Played Eterna Sonata, Vesperia, and Star Ocean 4 on it.
PS2 Japan region- bought because it was cheap for Destiny and because I don't have access to my other systems where I'm living now.

In order from first system to last:
Commodore 64: I just kinda got this system when I was little so there was nothing that made me get it.
N64: Nothing made me get this either. I was little and it was a gift from my dad.
Gamecube: Since I was a Nintendo fan and wanted to play the new Smash Bros., I got this system.
GBA SP: Honestly, I wanted to get this because of LoZ at first, but I then discovered the greater games on this system.
PS2: Final Fantasy X and other RPGs made me get this system.
DS Lite: Technically this is my sister's DS but she sold all her games and doesn't play the DS at all so I just use it.
Wii: Well hmm, this is the system that I waited over a year to get. I wanted it because of--like with the Gamecube--SSBB.
PSP: I got this because of the Tri-Ace games that I wanted to play, but also because my PS2 broke, and still is broken.

Umm, hmm...
NES - Bought for me
SNES - Bought for me
N64 - Mario 64
GCN - Melee
Wii - Cheaper than the other two when I got it
Genesis - Bought for me
Saturn - Bought for me
Dreamcast - Because it was there and Sonic Adventure
Game Boy Pocket - All my friends had one or an original GB
Game Boy Color - Liked the GB
Game Boy Advance - Liked the GBC
NDS - Mario 64 DS
NDS Lite - Gave mom old DS when this came out
PSX - FF7
PS2 - Liked the PSX
PS3 - Just to have it. I guess MGS4 at the time since I waited till that came out because I didn't want any other games before that.
PSP - Darkstalkers Collection that launched with it.
360 - My friend told me to get it
I really get most systems because they're there to get honestly. If I can't really think of a reason not to get a system nowadays, I'll probably end up getting it eventually. Also, I think I got mostly everything except the PS3 and 360 at or near launch, so I guess my biggest reason is that I like video games.

From first to last: GBC: My parents bought it for my sister and me. I can't remember ever having heard of a gameboy before then. N64: Again, my parents bought it for my sister and me. I was into video games at this point but I honestly can't remember if I petitioned them for it (I probably did). I don't recall being familiar with the other consoles at this age. GBA: My GBC dropped out of my pocket at the library, and when I realized and called the library, they said it wasn't there anymore I cried. My parents got the GBA for me that following Christmas. Gamecube: Again, I don't remember if I asked for this, but my parents got it for my brother and me. PS2: I had a Squeenix/Sonyf*g friend at school who would always rant and rave about how awesome the PS2 and Final Fantasy was. My parents were adamant that they would never buy another video game system for me, so I bought it and FFX with babysitting money. I had the intent of also obtaining this fabled FFVII that this girl raved about so much. DS: I don't remember when I got this, but my parents bought it for me. (So much for never buying me another console ever again... ) I don't remember why I wanted it. Probably for the sake of having it. GBA SP: It was my brother's, who was planning on selling it to Gamestop, aka the Oh-Hey-We'll-Give-You-$5-For-That-And-Then-Resell-It-For-$35 Store. But I bought it from him instead since I liked the SP's design better and my own GBA was beginning to show its age. PSP: I bought it for Radiant Mythology. Wii: I never had any interest in the Wii, but my father bought it for my brother and me anyway. xbox 360: I got it for my 17th birthday along with Vesperia. I don't think I'd ever have wanted a 360 otherwise, and it's still my only 360 game 1 1/2 years after the fact :X Sooner or later I'm going to buy a PS3. No point in pre-ordering ToV PS3 with no PS3, right? But I'm not in any hurry to do so. I'd be happy remaining on the PS2/N64 forever. I already have too many games on those consoles to beat.

Here's a few off the top of my head.
PSP: Remake of Megami Ibunroku: Persona. I have to say, it turned out to be a great system.
DS: Was still a Nintendo fan back then, but if I were to pick up a DS right now, it would be for Etrian Odyssey and SRW W.
PS2: No reason at all, I got it for Christmas one year without warning, and I wasn't much interested in it until then. With what I know now, I would pick up a PS2 in a heartbeat. It just has a huge library of games, many of which are my favorites, and a huge swath of series I like have major installments on the PS2. Seven Armored Core games, nine SRW games, all three ACE games, seven Megami Tensei games... Hot damn. And I don't even like Sony, here.
Xbox 360: Not technically mine, but I paid half. Armored Core 4.
Gameboy Micro: It was like twenty bucks used at Gamestop and looked sexy. Turned out to be a very sexy system.

PS2: All my friends going on about it, and it seemed the best choice for me. Got a ton of games for it, and probably still will be. PSP: Valkyrie Profile, and I had a discount at work for Christmas. DS: Etrian Odyssey, and again the same discount a year later. Xbox360: Seemed like a fight between it and the PS3, but Tales of Vesperia pushed it to the 360. Have only looked back on the exact purchase, not the system.

Oh~
Gameboy Pocket: I wanted my own Gameboy (I was using my mom's) and it was fairly new at the time. Got it for Christmas back in 1996, if I recall. It holds a high place as one of my fondest memories (I also got Link's Awakening at that time.) It is green~
Gameboy Color: I had gotten a game (Super Mario DX) that could only be played on one. I ended up using my mom's (she got one before I did) until I got one of my own. Mine is yellow.
Gameboy Advance: Pretty much for the fad (and kids around me had one.) Totally worth it, since I learned about Golden Sun through it... I got mine in 2002... I think? Maybe before then. I don't remember. Either way, it was purple.
Gamecube: I don't remember when I got this (2003 or 2004... I don't recall when.) One Christmas, I got this along with a GBA SP. This came bundled with a Legend of Zelda Collection and Megaman: Network Transmission. My brother got me a memory card and another controller the following day. After a trip years later, my Gamecube started to act weird and I eventually got another. The first one was black, and the current one I have is platinum.
Gameboy Advance SP: Got it for Christmas along with my first Gamecube. It came with some Dragonball Z game that I didn't like that much. I loved this thing so much! Even after I got a DS, I still used my SP. It's red.
Nintendo DS: I got this in 2005, if I recall correctly. My brother got me this as a early Christmas present because he was leaving for military training and wouldn't be around then. The package he got (Used DS plus DS kit) had another DS in it (and this one was new) and that was the one I took. My brother took the other before he left... Then he left it behind for my mom to use. Both of them are blue and I still use it.
Nintendo DS lite: The battery life of my older phat DS is pretty darn short. My parents got me one last year because I had pretty good grades. It's a shame that I couldn't put it to better use, since it's been a long while since I got a new game. It's cobalt (black and blue.)
Playstation: Hand-me-down; got it when my brother got a Playstation 2. It's the standard gray model.
Playstation 2: I was using my brothers until I got my own. I was playing it earlier today!
I hope to get a Wii and PS3 someday. I saw that there's going to be a Starocean game on the PS3 (hoping for a US port~) while browsing GameFAQs not too long ago, plus I want ToV. I want a Wii for Symphonia 2, Graces, Brawl, and some other things that I don't know about yet.

Star Ocean 4 comes out the same day on PS3 for NA and JPN. It's an actual international version this time.

PSX: Wanted a game system, and a friend recommended FFVII as a game for me--since I like puzzles. Hooked on RPGs ever since.
PS2: Bought it WITH FFX, but got it because I knew Suikoden III was for the PS2.
Gamecube: On a whim. Actually, it came with the Zelda game pack, and I wanted to play Four Sword Adventures since it was like Link to the Past.
XBox 360: At the time, it seemed Sony--my main gaming console--wasn't having too many RPGs made for it--like Tales of Vesperia--so I bought it, and played Last Remnant while waiting for ToV.
Will I get a PS3? If Suikoden continues on it--yes.
