I mean, Kilia? Deep villain? You must be joking. Anyway, I like Vesperia better. Vesperia's plot was holey, incoherent, cliche and poorly paced, but the characters were more interesting and 3D. Symphonia, while it had a decent, coherent plot, had no interesting main party characters. The characters make me yawn.

Okay, first off, lrn2grammar.
Second, Everyone has a right to their own opinion. Lauren was just stating how much she loves Vesperia, and you just went totally off on her. What's your problem? It's fine if you think that Symphonia is better, but you shouldn't be criticizing other's opinions.
Anyway, on topic time.
I like Vesperia more. I find the characters more interesting than that in Symphonia, and that's what makes me like it so much. Sure, the plot in Symphonia is great and all, but most of the characters, especially the villains, were just kind of there. In Vesperia, the villains had backstories. Take Yeager for example, he seems to be just an not a very nice person >( that you have to fight over and over again, but when you do his sidequest, you find out that he's a really nice guy. (Ex: Saving an orphanage, adopting Gauche and Droite, etc.) There's points I really love about Symphonia too, it's just that there's points about Vesperia that makes me love it more.

The problem with Vesperia's villains, is that their backstories is optional. So I found them very underdevelopped and thus uninteresting the first time. I'm starting to see them a bit more now, but it's still not much. And I don't really see the point of learning Yeager's backstory once he's dead, but maybe that's just me. With Symphonia, while it didn't have many important villains (the Cardinals just die as soon as you meet them or not much later - they don't really count as meaningful villains like Yeager or Zagi that are recurring characters), had ones you learned about throughout the whole story. The problem with backstories in sidequests is that, not only you might miss them the first time, but it also doesn't have an impact on the characters in the main storyline. I mean, they comment about it and stuff during the sidequest scene, but that's it. It's like they've completely forgotten about it in other parts of the sotry. And it's a pity, because the protagonists-villains dynamic is very interesting, especially when both parties start to know each other. The Symphonian characters had the occasion to learn in details what made Mithos, Kratos and Yuan the way they were. The fights with them were thus much more meaningful than if this development had been hidden. The Vesperian characters, on the other hand, fight almost strangers. Yes, it's different, it's maybe a bit more original, but the fights have less of an impact.
Just my two cents on the matter.

Yeah, I agree, Vesperia did a poor job with its villains. I really didn't care about saving the world/fighting villains in Vesperia because I didn't know why they were fighting me half the time. If I did, their reasons were cliche and stupid. I mean, Duke? He sucked. I knew he'd be the final boss from the moment I saw him, his reasons for trying to destroy the world as old as RPGs itself, and he just randomly popped in as a major villain only in the 3rd chapter. I also did almost all but two or three sidequests my first playthrough, but the sidequests didn't really help in making me care about the villains or explain them that much. The lackluster villains are part of what ruined Vesperia's plot for me.
Symphonian villains like the cardinals didn't really have a backstory, true, but I don't think they really needed it. The whole half-elf discrimination thing was explanation enough for why they acted the way they did.
But, despite that, in the end my preference for one game over the other comes down to the fact that Symphonia's actual party characters were about as interesting as rocks and Vesperia's were engaging and lively. But to each their own.

Well, I don't really think any of the Tales games have that engaging a story or villains. I thought Phantasia had the best ones personally.

Symphonia, really. Vesperia was okay, but the lack of overall character development and the weak plot was grating at times. Symphonia had some weak character development with some of the lesser main characters, but the characters overall were more likeable to me. Because sadly, other than Yuri and Flynn, I really didn't care about the rest of the characters in Vesperia. I will admit Vesperia had some pretty awesome villains. Underdeveloped villains, but awesome nonetheless.

I wasn't either but I know how to capitalize and use commas. You've shown you know how to too, but almost always never do, which comes off as laziness. Just capitalizing the right words and using a few commas here and there would make your posts much easier to read And it's coming, it's coming. Though, for that, I'd need to know your reasons for hating her...

What do you mean by "cliché"? How is her personality a cliché?

If I may post my opinion. . .
I really didn't like the Symphonian villains. Most of the Cardinals sort of just sat around, and then you fight them, they say "INFERIOR BEINGS", you easily dispatch them, and their last words are "HOW COULD I LOSE TO THESE INFERIOR BEINGS"
As for cliche, mithos was so obviously the villain. How many times have you seen "the last survivor is REALLY THE BADDIE IN DISGUISE!"
Hmm, unfortunately I cannot compare them to Vesperian villains as I do not have the game. This problem however will soon be remedied. . .
