Are there any games for you guys that you felt fell flat in the face of massive hype?
The biggest one for me is Final Fantasy VII. I didn't think it was bad, but it wasn't great either, and definitely not the "omgsoamazing" the fans would have you believe. I thought the characters were pretty boring and 2D, and the storyline wasn't particularly riveting either. I also found the battle system to be pretty boring too, but I don't like traditional turn-based anyway.
Brawl was another one for me. I liked its predecessors, but Brawl just wasn't that fun to me. Kill me for saying this, but I didn't feel like it really added anything to the basic gameplay--just more courses and characters and better graphics. I guess the biggest thing it has going for it is online capability, but I don't really see how that suddenly makes the game absolutely drop dead amazing and completely blows away its predecessors.

I thought Brawl was fun, but it's really more or less the same thing as its predecessors in my blunt opinion. XD Probably a couple of the biggest disappointments for me were Xenogears and Xenosaga. Xenogears started off really cool, but then I just... Started to not like that game. Especially Fei. Xenosaga was okay, but it just wasn't as great as the reviewers made it sound. Dragon Quest V was a bit of a disappointment; while I liked that game, it wasn't as awesome as I thought it would be. I thought that it would have a concept like Phantasy Star III, but no matter who you pick for your wife, the kids and the story are about the same. I was expecting that the kids would look completely different depending on the wife and the story would change a little bit depending on the wife, but nope. >_>
The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess. I was so hyped for this game and everyone seems to love it, but I just didn't care for it that much when I played it. I thought Ocarina of Time was better. :shot: There are also a couple of Tales disappointments that I have had. The first one was Abyss. :shotshotshot: Hate me all you like, but I did not care for Abyss. >_> After I played Symphonia and Phantasia I thought to myself, "This game is going to blow both those games away!" Well I finally got it and played it. ...Not as great as I expected. XD Not a bad game by any means, but I was extremely disappointed. Eternia. I only heard good things about this game. From the sounds of it, I thought that it would be my favorite of the series, but after beating the game... I have to say that I was disappointed in this Tales title too. Good game though, I recommend it to those who haven't played it. Legendia. I didn't expect much of this game so I wasn't disappointed in the game itself, but I was extremely disappointed in the soundtrack. Extremely. The actual quality of the songs is really good, but I didn't care much for the songs themselves. ...Yeah, I tend to be the weirdo among weirdos. XD EDIT: How did I forget to mention the entire Final Fantasy series? Great series, but not the greatest RPGs ever in my opinion.

I'm not going to touch the popular ones to call out, like Final Fantasy VII and Halo. Mainly because, many people already beaten those dead horse (and I don't find those two example on my list of overhyped games). Too Human for the Xbox 360. First, I just want to say that the reviews for the game was pretty mixed. That said, I played the demo and couldn't finish it because it was so boring. Now, this game wouldn't have been listed here if Denis Dyack didn't go on about how the public doesn't get the greatness of Too Human (oh yeah, it didn't help other professionals were up at arms over the criticism, like G4's Kevin Peirera calling out Gamespot's review of Too Human that gave it a 5/10). Because of that, I actually rented the retail game and...I was still bored by the game that I felt I needed a supply of Mountain Dew to make sure I'm still awake! Combat was pretty shallow, rarely makes me feel like a badass, the story was horrible and only got good at the end of the game (oh and it's a lead into a supposed trilogy), and was it really necessary to force me to watch a valkyrie take my dead body into Valhalla every time I die (which you will be seeing alot because the enemies were badly balanced). For a game with mixed reviews, it's crazy I still find the game to be overhyped (Note to Dyack, don't go stroking your ego like you did with Too Human). It's an attitude like this that keeps me from even wanting to mention the next one: There are also a couple of Tales disappointments that I have had. In a different topic, I mentioned this is bound to get me the Godfather-esque whacking treatment and that I feel like the only one that didn't like the game (even if other fans admit the same). I really found Tales of the Abyss to be highly overrated and I'm trying to resist writing this as if I'm writing a review. There's only like 2-3 main heroes, Ion, and maybe a couple of villains I liked (none of them is the main villain). Other than that, I really didn't care all that much about the Abyss cast. This was also currently one of the only times where I did not find the battles in a Tales game not all that fun. Also, the loading time was so bad it's practically encouraging the use of unauthorized PS2 hacks (FYI, I'm referring to using HDLoader). It feels like Tales of Legendia was less torturous for me than this game. (Though what's ironic is that I really did not enjoy the story for the Abyss game...yet it was at least decent when I watched the anime adaptation. Don't ask.) One last one...Eternal Sonata. This was one of the first game I got when I got my Xbox 360 late 2007. It was one of the game I was interested in for the system and liking the premise. It didn't start out bad but then near halfway through the game, it went downhill. I realized I found the battle system to be pretty shallow, the story was just bad, characters horribly tacked on (Remind me again why Salsa was in the party? She seem to do nothing.), and in the end, I ended up finding it to be pretty mediocre. It was pretty mediocre that I had to tell my PS3 owning sister+friend not to bother with this game, since it got a PS3 port. I also can't help but feel that Fredric Chopin is rolling in his grave after hearing about this game. Not to mention, this game affirms to me why I need to finish a game before I talk about how good/bad it is. Okay, my shoe size is 11 1/2 by U.S. measurements if you're going to make me wear cement shoes and toss me into deep water.

Brawl, definitely. My brother thought it would be awesome so he bought it. I never expected it to be good from the start. I mean, what kind of company would spoil all of the players about everything in the game before it is even released? My brother praised the game and all of my friends followed suit. One day my brother wanted me to play the game with him but I said no and he started to yell at me about how awesome the game is... Haha. Yeah, I didn't like that game too much. Even with Lucas, I didn't enjoy it. I have better things to do with my time like studying rather than knocking the CPU silly.
Then there's Contact. My inner Earthbound fan made me buy it. The game made so many claims but it never lived up to many of them. It was too short and the story became shallow shortly into the game. My other RPG's overshadow it. Mother 3 is so much better than it
Although Fire Emblem Radiant Dawn didn't have very much hype (neither did Contact, but whatever) I was dissapointed that it had no real character development. If you took away the characters' faces, I would consider them generics.

For me.... Final Fantasy XII - It had so much hype but I only played the game for a few hours before I actually fell asleep WHILE PLAYING. That is definitely not the experience I don't want when playing games. This is the main reason why I'm no longer hyped for popular games, and would instead, look at the overlooked games with not so good graphics but has gameplay that's actually fun. Silent Hill : Homecoming - The moment you "improve" what seems to be a "clunky melee system" of old games, and you've put former soldier as a main character, you've destroyed the frantic scare factor of a game series know for just that. Thanks, Konami USA. Konami Japan did way better in this series they've made, and since the fighting the monsters was not the point anyway, since they should scare the crap out of you to not bode well fighting against them... Final Fantasy IX - Played for 10 hours. I then gave it to a friend. Marvel VS Capcom 2 - Three words: Magneto, Storm, Cable. The game is just an infinite cheap combo killer projectile fest, and if you don't use the characters most people are using, you're pretty much dead. The music is very annoying too. Tekken 4 - You know how sometimes the main character of the game always has an edge over other characters? I got really excited over this game, but Jin became extremely broken. I saw that 8 out of the top 10 world players are using Jin, and it's downright ridiculous because they all play the same way. Dragon Quest VII - I played the demo. From that, I won't bother with the main game at all. I wouldn't want to play a game for hours to force myself to have "fun" with the game. All MMORPGS I tried - Everyone kept saying "try this game" and try to get me hooked in an MMORPG of their choice. Instead, I'm usually the first one call if quits, because I hate MMORPG grinding, and I seem to prefer to talk to people in real life than in games when playing games, because at least they can't be an a-hole anonymously, and they can't be a jerk in real life without consequences ♥ Funnily enough, when I played the Philippine free beta of Ragnarok Online, I got nearly all my guy cousins to play it. Then when it's no longer free, I quit playing in just two weeks, while all cousins are hooked for nearly a couple of years, spending money to play the game. Needless to say, they blame me for not only for getting them hooked enough to waste their money on (which could've been used for something more useful), they also blamed me for quitting

Tales of the Abyss. Im sorry its just that i cant beleave people would like Luke or Anise. They pretty much made me hate the game. that and the LOOOOOOOAAAAAAAAADDDDDDDSSSSSS I love fighting in Tales games. my fav thing to do in Symphonia was run around the map and fighting stuff. But the loadtime after eatch battle on the wold map made me so angry. otehr game that disapointed me was Eternal Sonata. It was beutifull and the game had potention.... but my god.... the diologue...... it made me want to screem at the TV. In both english and japanese too. that never happend before. Who ever wrote the dialogue in eternal sonata needs to get fired. same for who ever decided that villans need to magicaly disapear rigth after i kill them ( yes im talking about you count waltz . if you were so important, WHAT HAPPEND TO YOU AFTER THE FIGHT AND WHY DOES NO ONE CARE!??! and also people sould not be able to have a 10 minute monologue, let alot stand then walt to a window then fall then get up then wal to the other side of teh room then fall then get up then fall again WHILE DYING! NO ONE! Final Fantasy 7.... ANY OF THEM. People. Need. To. Stop. Hyping. This game. Look, the game was good. FOR ITS TIME. Its just not anymore. ohhhh "Come on you just hate it cuz of the old PS1 graphic! you suck! Your no Final Fantasy fan! you hate the greatest game of the serie" First off stupid fan boy: IM PROBLABLY ONE OF TEH LAST PEOPLE STILL PLAYING PS1 RPG AND STILL LOVING THEM! two: FF7's story is not teh greatest ever. you guys were just to nlow away by teh graphics at the time that you forgot about other good story lines. Oh? no otehr main caracter dies? oh? Cloud was teh first dark emo caracter? *wacks you* What about Galuf? what about Telah? did they die for nothing? ( telah did *gets punched* IM KIDDING) And sorry looser. Cecil was the first. and i actuly think he was the first emo rpg hero in general. Seriously fanboys. its was good but not THAT good =__=; And cloud is a sissy and even more annoying that Luke fon Fabre and i rest my case.

The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess. I was so hyped for this game and everyone seems to love it, but I just didn't care for it that much when I played it. I thought Ocarina of Time was better. :shot: I forgot about that one. I was expecting it to be pretty good after how long it took to make and how many times the release date got delayed (I'm beginning to think they push back games like Zelda just to increase hype, not because they're actually really working on it), but when I played it, it wasn't really anything special. I found it to be EXTREMELY easy and generally just kinda meh. The other Zeldas were better and more fun. TP was one of those games I played just for the hell of it despite not getting any sort of kick out of it, reached the final dungeon, saved, promised myself I would beat it tomorrow, and then never picked up again because I just didn't really care.

ToS2 I was expecting an epic adventure with the Symphonia cast and got Emil. Not to mention the small amount of time you have betwen when a ToS1 character joins and leaves.

Not to mention the small amount of time you have betwen when a ToS1 character joins and leaves. well that would have to be your own fault. even Namco was telling us it was a spinoff sequell. wich is why i pretty much got annoyed of Tos2 for a while since i met more people who kept expectinga wsomeness out of it and kept insulting Vesperia and calling it crap cuz it was on the 360

Ugh, I hated how people did that for ToV. Really, I wish those people would grow up already; they would've been all over it if it had been on PS3 or Wii.
I thought about throwing DotNW onto this list, but thought better of it, since I never hyped it up in my mind and didn't buy into the fan-created hype. I never expected it to be good since it WAS a spin-off sequel, so I went in not expecting to enjoy the game much. However, it did still fall short of my expectations, since I wasn't expecting it to be absolutely horrible and for it to be painful to play. I mean, I didn't enjoy it. At all.
But I guess that's a story for another day.

They don't like the game because... they don't have a 360 and don't have the game, so they can't play it! Seriously though, it doesn't have much merit if you hate a game solely because it's in another system. I'm sure they'll like it if it's in the system they own. They don't want to regret getting the system that they actually own anyway It's just like back in the day when Sega Genesis owners hated Mario and Nintendo Entertainment System owners hated Sonic. "Sega does what Nintendon't" and "Nintendo is what Genesisn't". I liked Final Fantasy VII... back in the day, when it was the best RPG in the US, a market which barely has any RPGs at the time anyway (which didn't really make much of a competition lol). I still like it, but I don't think I'd be able to play it again (I don't mind watching my bro play it, since he has his eyes set on buying it from the PS3 store). FFVIII is different on the other hand... FFVIII was the game I really, really love, and would greatly prefer it over any other Final Fantasies.

Let's see. I played FFVII on an original PSX--not PSOne, so that tells you how old my copy of the game is. A friend recommended it to me, not for all the hype (although, it DID have the tag: "And if you die, you can always hit...the reset button"), but because he said, "It is a great introduction to RPGs." Yes, it had a few flaws, but he was right. I still play it from time to time. But, I don't think it should be lifted up on a pedestal as many people have. It was a fun game--that's it.
FFIX: Yes! The last game for the PSX. It would include or make references to other FF characters/items and so on. Steiner was annoying, and I made it all the way to end, and like the rest of the world, said: "Where the hell did that boss come from?!" That was a bad move, Square. No mention of Necron, and suddenly, he's there.
That's all I can think of right now...

Seriously though, it doesn't have much merit if you hate a game solely because it's in another system. I'm sure they'll like it if it's in the system they own. I remember someone mentioning this on a chat room. "Wait! Now that Tales of Vesperia is being ported to Playstation 3, they suddenly give a damn?" Yes, kids! I know they're evil because they're Microsoft! I know you hate they're making you pay for something that's suppose to be offered for free (Online play)! I know it's cool to hate them for those reasons! Besides, your next agenda will...*tries to resist making a joke about how the PS3 fanboys will mock how those who bought Tales of Vesperia for the Xbox 360 got screw over on a paid beta* you know what? You fanboys are going to be doing it anyway. Enough sarcasm, moving on! Final Fantasy VII. Well, it was good but it was never my favorite one. Okay, I'll say it. I played it in 1998, a year after the original PS1 version. To say it right now, I got (and still have) the PC version. Maybe that's where my view is created from. (I find it funny that the PC version of Final Fantasy VII was published by EIDOS and that Square Enix owns EIDOS today). Brawl...well, the Melee players hate it for all the gameplay changes to it. Random Tripping? No wavedashing? You ruin Smash Bros! It's all about Melee! Melee is the real fighter! (Yeah. Competitive Smash Bros players hated Brawl). I can't think of any other games where the hype was all talk (anything else I think of is more like they made me lose interest in it because of the hype *cough Fallout 3 cough*).

When the consoles were simpler (and I use that term loosely), the game companies made the same games for multiple consoles--which were released at the same time.
They still are releasing for multiple consoles, but at a slower pace. It more than likely has to do with a contract clause or something. Why can't people understand this?
(Hating a game simply because I don't have the system is stupid. Envy people who can play it--yes. Hate the game? No.)
