Possible spoilers.
Tales of the Abyss was the first Tales game that I've ever played. Since then, I've tried a few others and have been using it as a rule of thumb.
I had some issues with Abyss, like the pacing with the story, but I still liked it overall. Hated jerk-Luke for the most part, but I was able to understand what he was going through the entire time. There are a lot of things that he took the wrong way and he's made his fair share of mistakes. It's a shame that he felt like an inferior being... Going back to what I said, the reasons why I dislike jerk-Luke may be tied with why I dislike being around kids.
Regarding the other characters, they were okay. I like Anise (mainly for looks, but her personality is okay... sometimes...), I relate Guy to Lelouch (and Emil, and Renton... and Ichigo) so it's hard to take him seriously. Jade was a cool old guy who made his fair share of snarks toward the party. Tear could have been a little better. Natalia felt snobby at first, but once sh mellowed out some, it felt like she was drowned out by the rest of the party.
Abyss was my first experience with the battle system, so I found it to be enjoyable. After playing other games after, I realized that it was too easy. I never died ever, except that time against Asch, but the fights were fun. I used Luke mostly the first time around, then I switched to Anise (equipped with a Demon Seal, if I recall correctly). On the last playthrough, I was using Guy. I tried Natalia before, but didn't like it. I also tried using Tear, but it was kinda ridiculous (she's the one I keep in the party for healing.) I couldn't get used to Jade, since I like close-combat and rely on his casts to back me up. I found Guy to be better than Luke, and I liked pounding enemies with Anise.
The graphics were okay, but I don't normally look at a game for that reason. They didn't look terrible or stand out as terrible, so I assume that they were okay.
But yeah, after playing other games, I've found that there are better games out there in my opinion. The hardest Tales game that I've played so far is Eternia. It's the only Tales game so far that I've died more than once... I like many things about it, but that's not what I'm here about.
I agree with many of your opinions, Cless, but my opinion on Luke does differ from yours. I'm okay with that, because everyone is entitled to their opinions.
It's cool that you made this topic. It's also cool that everyone is level-headed and calm about this. It feels nice to be able to say your opinion without getting bashed by those on the other side of it for once...
