No. I think they were equal--where one was stronger in one area than the other.
I mean, really, can we imagine an unarmed Luke getting a sword from an enemy?
(Am I the only person who thought that was cool of Asch?)

Just because he has a different opinion about the game than you doesn't make him stupid.

all i can say is u're really stupid (nothing personal , don't blame i just can't stand people insulting toa) As Polonius said, just because his opinion's different than yours doesn't give you the right to call him names. However, if you want to argue the points of Tales of the Abyss that you liked, that's fine. In fact, if you read the thread, you'll notice that there are those of us who have problems with the game--yet we enjoyed it.

Mod note: I know this is a derisive topic and all that, but please try not to use too many harsh words. You all have been relatively tame so far, and I'm far too lazy to have to deal with any huge arguments.
Also -- if you're going to insult someone because they don't share the same views, please do so legibly so I can properly reprimand you at a later date. >:C
MOST DEFINITELY SPOILERS -- but I'm too lazy to put a spoiler tag since most of you should know this stuff by now
I think I'm going to go dig myself into a grave here and say Tales of the Abyss is one of my least favorite main Tales games. I'm not saying I don't like it -- but I just find that it isn't as much as it's been hyped about. Then again, I'm the person who adores Legendia to bits... Even so, I liked it enough to stay up till 3-4AM timing some of the episodes of the anime, so it isn't that bad, but it still isn't worth all the hype and calling it the best Tales out there (at least till Vesperia came out...)
For me, Luke came off as someone who needed to grow some balls for most of the game. Even though he did go through a lot of character development, it still felt like what little he did progress after Akzeriuth went away by the Tower of Rem and then he managed to just barely redeem himself at the end of the game. I know someone out there's going to pull the "Of course he'd have low self-esteem!" card out there, so I'll address it now: While I do see why Luke would belittle himself so much with the replica problem out there, he's supposed to have a support system in the form of his friends. Could he have relied more on them to resolve his issues of self worth? Definitely. Did he? Not really. He isn't downright horrible, but he's still not a main character I'd like to listen to for the 3-4 successive playthroughs I went through. Meanwhile, Tear bores the hell out of me. It's like her entire schtick is to worry about Luke and Van and get sick...>_>;;
What I do like about the game are the other main characters, who have some kind of interesting dimension to them. Natalia is one of my favorite supporting characters, since she shows that for one of such delicate upbringing, it's okay to be emotional to the point of breaking down as well as strong enough to overcome those problems. Jade and Guy are way up there as well -- Hell, I even love Anise, though it's mostly because I attach Tutti to her at the beginning of the game and then she's ubeatable~ Asch was also an interesting character to follow and I loved his relationship with Natalia to bits~
The story did start to lag a bit in the middle, but it was bearable for the most part. Also would've liked for them to use other towns as meeting places and not just Daath and Belkend...But those are just minor gripes.

miken-chan, you mentioned something that the OP also said:
"It didn't match the hype."
And, I think that's the problem. Usually, those that hype a game fail to see the bad points. Unfortunately, what happens is people expect this ultra-mega cool game with no flaws and perfect gameplay. That generally doesn't happen.
I KNOW Abyss has bad points. But it's still a fun game to play. I'd rather someone tell me the truth about a game.
Heck, my favorite series has bad points all over the place (Suikoden)--but I still enjoy it.

But it's still a fun game to play. I'd rather someone tell me the truth about a game. Heck, my favorite series has bad points all over the place (Suikoden)--but I still enjoy it. Yeah, it's true about the hype bit there. Though sometimes, it's hard to escape it. It's as if you're with a friend that won't stop talking about, say, how awesome The Dark Knight was and pushes you into it (okay, I thought that movie was great but that's not the point). Then there's also a couple of games I know of that got ridiculously hyped by the maker: Fable and Too Human. Peter Molyneux is pretty infamous for talking big and not delivering on 90% of said big talk. It happened with Black and White too. He made both Fable and Black and White as mind blowing games and only came out to be just good. In the case of Fable, he actually went as far as apologizing for Fable not living up to the original promise it was hyped up to be (and it was a case of "I got these great ideas and I just can't help talking about it!" even if it didn't make it into the game). Now Too Human is probably the most ridiculous one that I'd have to really make my post longer that I won't talk about it...at least for now. I guess I'm just saying is that, even though one could try avoiding the hype, there are moments you're going to run into it, no matter how much one tries to get away from it. Before the release of Tales of the Abyss, I was like, "Okay, another Tales game. I'm going to be checking it out anyway, though I'm not expecting much to blow my mind." Then after so many people immediately proclaim even the first 30 minutes is better than the awfulness that was Tales of Legendia and seeing so many, "Best Tales ever!" comments. That's when the hype took over. It didn't really blow my mind, but the hype say it should have. One last note: Tales of the Abyss isn't the worst game I have played, though (despite how much I think it isn't all that). That honor goes to Transformers: Convoy no Nazo/Mystery of Optimus Prime. Yeah, I'm pretty aware I'd need to work on blocking the hype out of my mind.

Miken, I actually completely agree with you on choices in characters there. I guess we're rare. Every criticism I have of Abyss has already been said, I pretty much agree with Miken's entire post. XD I really can't stand Luke. I understand all the points that have been said about his character, they're interesting, but I can't deal with listening to him talk. XD For me, even his character development seems very rushed. He's been asleep and then suddenly, oh I have to change. And then his entire attitude changes within a few minutes and he's acting better. That's just impossible. XD I like the idea the Abyss faces, replicas/cloning, but the main villains Van and Mohs, I really dislike. I pretty much play Abyss for Natalia and the God-Generals. Which is enough for me to play it, and enjoy it, but not to call it my favorite or deem it the best.

That reminds me..our local magazine ever had issue about "Tales, as long as it is Fujishima, will be the best tales ever no matter what"
do you think it's really working like that?

Well, since I am Abyss fan so I got no real complain, it's just they have some riddiculous flaws, like when I landed my Albiore in front of Daath, suddenly when I went out of the town it's Dissapear and I was panic like hell, I thought I had forgotten where I parked it, and I got horror whether the disc been cursed to have this kind of error, but the Albiore is automatically sent to nearest port and I laughed.
and I always got this on my mind...Luke's swords are bigm and I often switch it to Guy to use it, and you know Guy's sword sheater is not THAT big. it's slim like Katana but poof! the sword entered in with ease XD

@nutella: I always laughed at the whole sword thing myself. It's called the "willing suspension of disbelief." You KNOW it's impossible, but you go with it, anyway.
As for the Albiore thing--yep. Here, too. I think that's during the quest for Mieu Fire 2, isn't it?
@chochi: I've never played Tierkreis, so I have no opinion on that.

Wow. . . I suddenly feel like starting a thread titled "Am I the Only One Who thinks Abyss Was All That" It certainly seems like NO ONE likes Abyss after reading this. . .

Oh, don't get me wrong, I love Abyss. It's without a doubt my favorite Tales game. Even so, I can still admit it has flaws. Every game does, after all.
