Wow. . . I suddenly feel like starting a thread titled "Am I the Only One Who thinks Abyss Was All That" It certainly seems like NO ONE likes Abyss after reading this. . . You obviously haven't read my posts.... I love Abyss--it's one of my favorites--right after Suikoden. I was taught a true fan is one who accepts both the good and bad points of whatever it is one likes. And, most of us here like Abyss despite the flaws. We're not blind to the problems or glitches the game has. It makes the game that much quirkier, and makes it definitely Abyss.

Chochi made it for me a little bit ago. OT: As we've mentioned before--hype can either make or break a game. I try not to let hype make my decisions for me (and luckily, there wasn't much here), but once in a while, I tend NOT to try something because of the hype. Let me decide for myself whether I'll like it or not. Just because you do, doesn't mean I will.

I felt the same way about Vesperia, so even though I can't agree with you on all points, I can respect your opinion. ^^

I only ran through Abyss 3 times, maybe not enough times to truly relate to you all, as my only real gripe with the game is how retard unbalanced Unknown mode is.
Being max level will all skill and best weapons/armor attached to each character, Reid was still able to single handedly demolish my entire team while we were only able to do 2-digit damage to him (3-digit with magic, but nothing higher than 400). Mint too, Pow Hammer should never do 4k under any circumstance. Neblim too, doing 15k the second the fight starts (love the HP cap at 9999).
Other than that Abyss is a really solid game and I do think it's all that.

I enjoyed Abyss, but I still can't bring myself to play it through a second time.
I'll be honest, I hated Luke and Tear, and since there was so much focus on them I ended up getting annoyed with the game. I liked that Luke actually went through some major character development, but the one big shift felt a little bit sudden, and he didn't change much after that. I found both long-haired and short-haired Luke annoying, though short-haired Luke was a bit cute at times. Tear... Tear's just a big mess, I think. I like her character design, but she's just so dull, and doesn't go through much character development at all. Plus, I found her relationship with Luke a bit sick... He's too young, I would've liked it if they had something like a brother-sister relationship instead.
Now, I love most of the side-characters. All of the other party members and the God-Generals are what kept me going in the game. Really loved them all.
The story itself, yeah, the pacing problems. Towards the middle of the game, I found myself thinking "when will it end!?", I just got really sick of the stalling and backtracking. I still liked most of the story, but it just felt like the game could've been 10 hours shorter.
And then there's the issue with the programming, too... I thought my PS2 would blow up a couple of times, hahaha.
tl;dr: Tales of the Abyss isn't my favorite game, it's probably my least favorite in the series, and I have some big issues with it, but it's still a pretty good game that I honestly enjoyed.

for poeple who plays TotA...they are divided in 2: 1/Luke Fans.....Asch Haters 2/Asch Fans.....Luke Haters or mybe it's just me........ Nope. I'm both an Asch and Luke fan. Hell, I even call them the 'fon Fabre twins'. XD As for Tear sounding so flat in the NA version, it's the VA we can blame. Yukana sounds so awesome. <3 she even sounded warm in some parts, but probably that's because she's kuudere. XD I like Abyss. What got to me was the sheer idiocy of the claims of the villains in the game like Mohs accusing Natalia of usurping the position of the princess. How the hell can a baby do that? and Everyone being a hypocrite. Also, I'd like to add... Jade got so pissed at Luke with what he did at Akzeriuth because Luke reminded Jade of his younger-self. XD Abyss is also my first game for the series so... that'll probably be my basis with the games to come. /2cents

Trust me, liking Asch and disliking luke may have negative correlation. It doesn't mark them as cause and effect. XD People who like Asch think he's awesome, people who dislike Luke think he isn't. XD
Liking Asch is just a tiny part of the reason, but disliking Luke has it's own reasons too.

I don't get why a character being insecure of himself is omg such a flaw!!!1!1!one Especially when the point of the game is to make him start liking himself. I find it more interesting to witness a character's inner struggles than have one who's pretty static through the whole thing, no matter how "badass" he is. Mmh that's probably why I vastly prefer Luke, Emil and Asbel over Lloyd and Yuri...

Mmh that's probably why I vastly prefer Luke, Emil and Asbel over Lloyd and Yuri... My idea about why that is such a problem with people is more about...let's put it this way using this statement: "Stop being such an emo, you twit!" People really seem to hate people portrayed as wimps. I'll explain it like this. There's always been that female stereotype about how they're so helpless and aren't able to put up a fight, right? Well, it shouldn't be that bad for guys to be sensitive...oh wait! They're not being a man if they're sensitive! Men has to be able to punch another guy in the face and not feel remorse about it. Males are not suppose to cry! They're supposed to be strong and not take anything from anyone! "Oh, that guy is crying? What an emo wimp!" "Oh, that guy isn't confident! What an emo!" Oh yeah, and if a guy is sensitive, they are not men! They're women because they aren't being tough guys (oh yeah, two stereotypes sneaked into this sentence)! Truthfully, there is another particular reason I ended up hating Luke but...that's going to be too personal on my part to even mention it. Yet, even with my self-aware hypocrisy in my topic starter, I didn't have such a problem with Emil, especially when if I describe both of them loosely as "pathetic" (no character bashing was intended when saying that). (And truthfully, I rather not hear the word, "emo" ever again. But realistically, that ain't happening)

For me, it's not so much Luke's pitying himself or being insecure. It's the fact that he's so selfish and ignorant. I know that it's not his fault for being ignorant and overly sheltered -- but it still gets on my nerves. XD And how he treats people, how he speaks to them, just overall... kind of disgusts me. ._. He can be as weak, pitiful, pathetic, etc. as he wants as long as he doesn't treat like everyone else like crap for no reason.
Asch? Yeah. Asch kind of has a reason to be a jerk. XD I still don't appreciate it, or enjoy it, but I can understand. Luke sort of grows to have a reason, you could argue, but still. It's a bit ridiculous and far too often for my tastes.
Emil I have no issue with, other than I'd prefer if he stopped repeating "courage is the magic that turns dreams into reality" all the time.
Neither Luke or Emil is "emo" to me, and I also think they're far too different to compare at all.

^ I know he's quite condescendant at the beginning, but he changes after Akzeriuth, and tries to get to know people and understand them.
I don't like the word "emo" either. Nowadays, it seems to have become the etiquette people tack on male characters they don't like, in the same fashion as "Mary Sue" is used for females, regardless of their personalities. Pff stereotypes...
